Amos 3:13–4:2

13 “Hear this and testify against the descendants of Jacob,” declares the Lord, the Lord God Almighty.

14 “On the day I punish Israel for her sins,

I will destroy the altars of Bethel;

the horns of the altar will be cut off

and fall to the ground.

15 I will tear down the winter house

along with the summer house;

the houses adorned with ivory will be destroyed

and the mansions will be demolished,”

declares the Lord.

1 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria,

you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy

and say to your husbands, “Bring us some drinks!”

2 The Sovereign Lord has sworn by his holiness:

“The time will surely come

when you will be taken away with hooks,

the last of you with fishhooks.

13 “Hear, and testify against the house of Jacob,”

declares the Lord God, the God of hosts,

14 “that on the day I punish Israel for his transgressions,

I will punish the altars of Bethel,

and the horns of the altar shall be cut off

and fall to the ground.

15 I will strike the winter house along with the summer house,

and the houses of ivory shall perish,

and the great houses shall come to an end,”

declares the Lord.

1 “Hear this word, you cows of Bashan,

who are on the mountain of Samaria,

who oppress the poor, who crush the needy,

who say to your husbands, ‘Bring, that we may drink!’

2 The Lord God has sworn by his holiness

that, behold, the days are coming upon you,

when they shall take you away with hooks,

even the last of you with fishhooks.

13 Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob,

Saith the Lord God, the God of hosts,

14 That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him

I will also visit the altars of Beth-el:

And the horns of the altar shall be cut off,

And fall to the ground.

15 And I will smite the winter house with the summer house;

And the houses of ivory shall perish,

And the great houses shall have an end, saith the Lord.

1 Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria,

Which oppress the poor, which crush the needy,

Which say to their masters, Bring, and let us drink.

2 The Lord God hath sworn by his holiness,

That, lo, the days shall come upon you,

That he will take you away with hooks,

And your posterity with fishhooks.

13 “Now listen to this, and announce it throughout all Israel,” says the Lord, the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.

14 “On the very day I punish Israel for its sins,

I will destroy the pagan altars at Bethel.

The horns of the altar will be cut off

and fall to the ground.

15 And I will destroy the beautiful homes of the wealthy—

their winter mansions and their summer houses, too—

all their palaces filled with ivory,”

says the Lord.

1 Listen to me, you fat cows

living in Samaria,

you women who oppress the poor

and crush the needy,

and who are always calling to your husbands,

“Bring us another drink!”

2 The Sovereign Lord has sworn this by his holiness:

“The time will come when you will be led away

with hooks in your noses.

Every last one of you will be dragged away

like a fish on a hook!

13 Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,”

Says the Lord God, the God of hosts,

14 “That in the day I punish Israel for their transgressions,

I will also visit destruction on the altars of Bethel;

And the horns of the altar shall be cut off

And fall to the ground.

15 I will destroy the winter house along with the summer house;

The houses of ivory shall perish,

And the great houses shall have an end,”

Says the Lord.

1 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria,

Who oppress the poor,

Who crush the needy,

Who say to your husbands, “Bring wine, let us drink!”

2 The Lord God has sworn by His holiness:

“Behold, the days shall come upon you

When He will take you away with fishhooks,

And your posterity with fishhooks.

13 “Listen and be witnesses against the family of Jacob,” says the Lord God, the God All-Powerful.

14 “When I punish Israel for their sins,

I will also destroy the altars at Bethel.

The corners of the altar will be cut off,

and they will fall to the ground.

15 I will tear down the winter house,

together with the summer house.

The houses decorated with ivory will be destroyed,

and the great houses will come to an end,” says the Lord.

1 Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan on the Mountain of Samaria.

You take things from the poor

and crush people who are in need.

Then you command your husbands,

“Bring us something to drink!”

2 The Lord God has promised this:

“Just as surely as I am a holy God,

the time will come

when you will be taken away by hooks,

and what is left of you with fishhooks.

13 Hear ye, and testify against the house of Jacob, saith the Lord Jehovah, the God of hosts. 14 For in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him, I will also visit the altars of Beth-el; and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground. 15 And I will smite the winter-house with the summer-house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith Jehovah.

1 Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, that oppress the poor, that crush the needy, that say unto their lords, Bring, and let us drink. 2 The Lord Jehovah hath sworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that they shall take you away with hooks, and your residue with fish-hooks.

13 Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob, saith the Lord Jehovah, the God of hosts, 14 that in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him, I will also punish the altars of Bethel; and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground. 15 And I will smite the winter-house with the summer-house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and many houses shall have an end, saith Jehovah.

1 Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, that oppress the poor, that crush the needy, that say to their lords, Bring, and let us drink: 2 the Lord Jehovah hath sworn by his holiness, that behold, days shall come upon you, when he will take you away with hooks, and your posterity with fish-hooks;

13 Listen, and testify against the descendants of Jacob, 

declares the Almighty Lord, the God of Armies. 

14 On the day I punish Israel for its disobedience, 

I will also destroy the altars at Bethel. 

The horns of the altar will be cut off and will fall to the ground. 

15 I will tear down winter houses as well as summer houses. 

Houses ⸤decorated⸥ with ivory will be destroyed. 

Mansions will be demolished, declares the Lord. 

1 Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan who live on Mount Samaria. 

You women oppress the poor and abuse the needy. 

You say to your husbands, “Get some wine! Let’s drink!” 

2 The Almighty Lord has taken an oath on his holiness: 

Surely, the time is going to come 

when you will be taken away on hooks, 

and the rest of you on fishhooks. 

13 Listen and testify against the house of Jacob—

this is the declaration of the Lord God,

the God of Hosts.

14 I will punish the altars of Bethel

on the day I punish Israel for its crimes;

the horns of the altar will be cut off

and fall to the ground.

15 I will demolish the winter house

and the summer house;

the houses inlaid with ivory will be destroyed,

and the great houses will come to an end.

This is the Lord’s declaration.

1 Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan

who are on the hill of Samaria,

women who oppress the poor

and crush the needy,

who say to their husbands,

“Bring us something to drink.”

2 The Lord God has sworn by His holiness:

Look, the days are coming

when you will be taken away with hooks,

every last one of you with fishhooks.

13 Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,

says the Lord God, the God of hosts:

14 On the day I punish Israel for its transgressions,

I will punish the altars of Bethel,

and the horns of the altar shall be cut off

and fall to the ground.

15 I will tear down the winter house as well as the summer house,

and the houses of ivory shall perish,

and the great houses shall come to an end,

says the Lord.

when they shall take you away with hooks,

even the last of you with fishhooks.

13 “Listen and testify against the house of Jacob,” declares my Lord Yahweh, the God of hosts. 14 “For on the day I punish Israel for its transgression, I will also punish the altars of Bethel and the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground. 15 I will ruin the winter house as well as the summer house, and the houses of ivory will perish and the great houses shall come to an end,” declares Yahweh.

1 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan who live on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the powerless, who crush the poor, who say to their husbands, “Bring something so that we may drink!” 2 My Lord Yahweh has sworn by his holiness that, “Behold, the days are coming upon you when they will take you away with hooks, even the last of you with fishing hooks.

13 “Listen to me,” announces the Lord. “Witness against the people of Jacob,” says the Lord God who rules over all.

14 “I will punish Israel for their sins.

When I do, I will destroy their altars at Bethel.

The horns that stick out from the upper corners

of their main altar will be cut off.

They will fall to the ground.

15 I will tear their winter houses down.

I will also pull down their summer houses.

The houses they have decorated with ivory will be destroyed.

And their princely houses will be torn down,”

announces the Lord.

1 Listen to the Lord’s message,

you women who live on the hill of Samaria.

You treat poor people badly.

You crush those who are in need.

You say to your husbands,

“Bring us some drinks!”

But you are already as fat

as the cows in Bashan.

2 The Lord and King has taken an oath

in his own holy name.

He says, “You can be sure

that the time will come

when your enemies will put hooks in your faces.

They will lead every one of you away with fishhooks.
