Revelation 20
1 Then I saw aan angel coming down from heaven, holding the bkey of the abyss and a great chain 1in his hand.
2 And he laid hold of the adragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bbound him for a thousand years;
3 and he threw him into the aabyss, and shut it and bsealed it over him, so that he would cnot deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.
4 Then I saw athrones, and bthey sat on them, and cjudgment was given to them. And I saw dthe souls of those who had been beheaded because of 1their etestimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not fworshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the gmark on their forehead and on their hand; and they hcame to life and ireigned with Christ for a thousand years.
5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. aThis is the first resurrection.
6 aBlessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the bsecond death has no power, but they will be cpriests of God and of Christ and will dreign with Him for a thousand years.
7 When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be areleased from his prison,
8 and will come out to adeceive the nations which are in the bfour corners of the earth, cGog and Magog, to dgather them together for the war; the number of them is like the esand of the 1seashore.
9 And they acame up on the 1broad plain of the earth and surrounded the bcamp of the 2saints and the cbeloved city, and dfire came down from heaven and devoured them.
10 And athe devil who adeceived them was thrown into the blake of fire and 1brimstone, where the cbeast and the cfalse prophet are also; and they will be dtormented day and night forever and ever.
11 Then I saw a great white athrone and Him who sat upon it, from whose 1presence bearth and heaven fled away, and cno place was found for them.
12 And I saw the dead, the agreat and the small, standing before the throne, and 1bbooks were opened; and another 2book was opened, which is cthe book of life; and the dead awere judged from the things which were written in the 1books, daccording to their deeds.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and adeath and Hades bgave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them caccording to their deeds.
14 Then adeath and Hades were thrown into bthe lake of fire. This is the csecond death, the lake of fire.
15 And if 1anyone’s name was not found written in athe book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21–22
1 Then I saw aa new heaven and a new earth; for bthe first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.
2 And I saw athe holy city, bnew Jerusalem, ccoming down out of heaven from God, dmade ready as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, athe tabernacle of God is among men, and He will 1bdwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them2,
4 and He will awipe away every tear from their eyes; and bthere will no longer be any death; cthere will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; dthe first things have passed away.”
5 And aHe who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am bmaking all things new.” And He * said, “Write, for cthese words are faithful and true.”
6 Then He said to me, “1aIt is done. I am the bAlpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. cI will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the dwater of life without cost.
7 “aHe who overcomes will inherit these things, and bI will be his God and he will be My son.
8 “aBut for the cowardly and 1unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in bthe lake that burns with fire and 2brimstone, which is the csecond death.”
9 aThen one of the seven angels who had the bseven bowls 1full of the cseven last plagues came and spoke with me, saying, “aCome here, I will show you the dbride, the wife of the Lamb.”
10 And ahe carried me away 1bin the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me cthe holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,
11 having athe glory of God. Her 1brilliance was like a very costly stone, as a bstone of ccrystal-clear jasper.
12 1It had a great and high wall, 1awith twelve bgates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel.
13 There were three gates on the east and three gates on the north and three gates on the south and three gates on the west.
14 And the wall of the city had atwelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the btwelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 The one who spoke with me had a 1gold measuring arod to measure the city, and its bgates and its wall.
16 The city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as the width; and he measured the city with the 1rod, 2fifteen hundred miles; its length and width and height are equal.
17 And he measured its wall, 1seventy-two yards, according to ahuman 2measurements, which are also bangelic measurements.
18 The material of the wall was ajasper; and the city was bpure gold, like 1clear cglass.
19 aThe foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was bjasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, cemerald;
20 the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, asardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst.
21 And the twelve agates were twelve bpearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was cpure gold, like transparent dglass.
22 I saw ano 1temple in it, for the bLord God the Almighty and the cLamb are its 1temple.
23 And the city ahas no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for bthe glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the cLamb.
24 aThe nations will walk by its light, and the bkings of the earth 1will bring their glory into it.
25 In the daytime (for athere will be no night there) bits gates cwill never be closed;
26 and athey will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it;
27 and anothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those 1whose names are bwritten in the Lamb’s book of life.
The River and the Tree of Life
1 Then ahe showed me a briver of the cwater of life, 1clear das crystal, coming from the throne of God and of 2the Lamb,
2 in the middle of aits street. bOn either side of the river was cthe tree of life, bearing twelve 1kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3 aThere will no longer be any curse; and bthe throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will cserve Him;
4 they will asee His face, and His bname will be on their cforeheads.
5 And athere will no longer be any night; and they 1will not have need bof the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them; and they will creign forever and ever.
6 And ahe said to me, “bThese words are faithful and true”; and the Lord, the cGod of the spirits of the prophets, dsent His angel to show to His bond-servants the things which must soon take place.
7 “And behold, aI am coming quickly. bBlessed is he who 1heeds cthe words of the prophecy of this book.”
8 aI, John, am the one who …

* | A star (*) is used to mark verbs that are historical presents in the Greek which have been translated with an English past tense in order to conform to modern usage. The translators recognized that in some contexts the present tense seems more unexpected and unjustified to the English reader than a past tense would have been. But Greek authors frequently used the present tense for the sake of heightened vividness, thereby transporting their readers in imagination to the actual scene at the time of occurence. However, the translators felt that it would be wise to change these historical presents to English past tenses. |
