Isaiah 28:1–4 — The New International Version (NIV)

Woe to that wreath, the pride of Ephraim’s drunkards,

to the fading flower, his glorious beauty,

set on the head of a fertile valley—

to that city, the pride of those laid low by wine!

See, the Lord has one who is powerful and strong.

Like a hailstorm and a destructive wind,

like a driving rain and a flooding downpour,

he will throw it forcefully to the ground.

That wreath, the pride of Ephraim’s drunkards,

will be trampled underfoot.

That fading flower, his glorious beauty,

set on the head of a fertile valley,

will be like figs ripe before harvest—

as soon as people see them and take them in hand,

they swallow them.

Isaiah 28:1–4 — English Standard Version (ESV)

Ah, the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim,

and the fading flower of its glorious beauty,

which is on the head of the rich valley of those overcome with wine!

Behold, the Lord has one who is mighty and strong;

like a storm of hail, a destroying tempest,

like a storm of mighty, overflowing waters,

he casts down to the earth with his hand.

The proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim

will be trodden underfoot;

and the fading flower of its glorious beauty,

which is on the head of the rich valley,

will be like a first-ripe fig before the summer:

when someone sees it, he swallows it

as soon as it is in his hand.

Isaiah 28:1–4 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim,

Whose glorious beauty is a fading flower,

Which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!

Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one,

Which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm,

As a flood of mighty waters overflowing,

Shall cast down to the earth with the hand.

The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim,

Shall be trodden under feet:

And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower,

And as the hasty fruit before the summer;

Which when he that looketh upon it seeth,

While it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.

Isaiah 28:1–4 — New Living Translation (NLT)

What sorrow awaits the proud city of Samaria—

the glorious crown of the drunks of Israel.

It sits at the head of a fertile valley,

but its glorious beauty will fade like a flower.

It is the pride of a people

brought down by wine.

For the Lord will send a mighty army against it.

Like a mighty hailstorm and a torrential rain,

they will burst upon it like a surging flood

and smash it to the ground.

The proud city of Samaria—

the glorious crown of the drunks of Israel—

will be trampled beneath its enemies’ feet.

It sits at the head of a fertile valley,

but its glorious beauty will fade like a flower.

Whoever sees it will snatch it up,

as an early fig is quickly picked and eaten.

Isaiah 28:1–4 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim,

Whose glorious beauty is a fading flower

Which is at the head of the verdant valleys,

To those who are overcome with wine!

Behold, the Lord has a mighty and strong one,

Like a tempest of hail and a destroying storm,

Like a flood of mighty waters overflowing,

Who will bring them down to the earth with His hand.

The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim,

Will be trampled underfoot;

And the glorious beauty is a fading flower

Which is at the head of the verdant valley,

Like the first fruit before the summer,

Which an observer sees;

He eats it up while it is still in his hand.

Isaiah 28:1–4 — New Century Version (NCV)

How terrible it will be for Samaria, the pride of Israel’s drunken people!

That beautiful crown of flowers is just a dying plant

set on a hill above a rich valley where drunkards live.

Look, the Lord has someone who is strong and powerful.

Like a storm of hail and strong wind,

like a sudden flood of water pouring over the country,

he will throw Samaria down to the ground.

That city, the pride of Israel’s drunken people,

will be trampled underfoot.

That beautiful crown of flowers is just a dying plant

set on a hill above a rich valley.

That city will be like the first fig of summer.

Anyone who sees it

quickly picks it and eats it.

Isaiah 28:1–4 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley of them that are overcome with wine! Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one; as a tempest of hail, a destroying storm, as a tempest of mighty waters overflowing, will he cast down to the earth with the hand. The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under foot: and the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be as the first-ripe fig before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.

Isaiah 28:1–4 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious adornment, which is on the head of the fat valley of them that are overcome with wine. Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, as a storm of hail and a destroying tempest; as a storm of mighty waters overflowing, shall he cast down to the earth with might. The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under feet; and the fading flower of his glorious adornment which is on the head of the fat valley shall be like an early fig before the summer: as soon as he that seeth it perceiveth it, scarcely is it in his hand, he swalloweth it down.

Isaiah 28:1–4 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

How horrible it will be for the arrogant drunks of Ephraim.

Their glorious beauty is ⸤like⸥ a withered flower.

They are at the entrance to a fertile valley

where they lie drunk from wine.

The Lord has one who is strong and powerful.

He is like a hailstorm, a destructive wind.

He is like a thunderstorm, an overwhelming flood.

He will throw them to the ground forcefully.

The arrogant drunks of Ephraim will be trampled underfoot.

Their glorious beauty is ⸤like⸥ a withered flower.

They are at the entrance to a fertile valley.

They will be like figs that ripened early.

As soon as someone sees them,

they will be taken and eaten.

Isaiah 28:1–4 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Woe to the majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards,

and to the fading flower of its beautiful splendor,

which is on the summit above the rich valley.

Woe to those overcome with wine.

Look, the Lord has a strong and mighty one —

like a devastating hail storm,

like a storm with strong flooding waters.

He will bring it across the land with His hand.

The majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards

will be trampled underfoot.

The fading flower of his beautiful splendor,

which is on the summit above the rich valley,

will be like a ripe fig before the summer harvest.

Whoever sees it will swallow it

while it is still in his hand.

Isaiah 28:1–4 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Ah, the proud garland of the drunkards of Ephraim,

and the fading flower of its glorious beauty,

which is on the head of those bloated with rich food, of those overcome with wine!

See, the Lord has one who is mighty and strong;

like a storm of hail, a destroying tempest,

like a storm of mighty, overflowing waters;

with his hand he will hurl them down to the earth.

Trampled under foot will be

the proud garland of the drunkards of Ephraim.

And the fading flower of its glorious beauty,

which is on the head of those bloated with rich food,

will be like a first-ripe fig before the summer;

whoever sees it, eats it up

as soon as it comes to hand.

Isaiah 28:1–4 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Ah! The garland of the pride of the drunkards of Ephraim

and the withering flower of the glory of his beauty,

which is at the head of the rich valley,

ones overcome with wine!

Look! The Lord has a mighty and strong one,

like a rainstorm of hail, a wind storm of destruction,

like a rainstorm of mighty overflowing waters,

he will put them to the earth with his hand.

The garland of the pride of the drunkards of Ephraim

will be trampled by feet,

and the withering flower of the glory of its beauty

which is at the head of the rich valley

will be like its early fig before summer,

which the one who sees it swallows while it is still in his hand.

Isaiah 28:1–4 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

How terrible it will be for the city of Samaria!

It sits on a hill like a crown of flowers.

The leaders of Ephraim are drunk.

They take pride in their city.

It sits above a valley that has rich soil.

How terrible it will be for the glorious beauty of that fading flower!

The Lord will bring the strong and powerful king of Assyria against Samaria.

The Lord will throw that city down to the ground with great force.

It will be like a hailstorm.

It will be like a wind that destroys everything.

It will be like a driving rain and a flooding storm.

That city is like a crown.

The leaders of Ephraim are drunk.

They take pride in their city.

But its enemies will walk all over it.

It sits on a hill above a rich valley.

It’s like a crown of flowers whose glorious beauty is fading away.

But it will become like a fig that is ripe before harvest.

As soon as someone sees it,

he picks it and swallows it.
