1 Chronicles 11:4–8
4 Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (athat is, Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there.
5 The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You shall not enter here.” Nevertheless David captured the stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David).
6 Now David had said, “Whoever strikes down a Jebusite first shall be chief and commander.” aJoab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief.
7 Then David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David.
8 He 1built the city all around, from the 2Millo even to the surrounding area; and Joab 3repaired the rest of the city.

4 David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites who lived there 5 said to David, “You will not get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.
6 David had said, “Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander-in-chief.” Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.
7 David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David. 8 He built up the city around it, from the terraces to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city.

The Jebusites who lived there 5 spoke to David. They said, “You won’t get in here.”

6 David had said, “Anyone who leads the attack against the Jebusites will become the commander of Israel’s army.” Joab went up first. So he became the commander of the army. He was the son of Zeruiah.
7 David moved into the fort. So it was called the City of David. 8 He built up the city around the fort. He filled in the low places. He built a wall around it. During that time, Joab built up the rest of the city.
