5Now when* he entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him, appealing to him 6and saying, “Lord, my slavea is lying paralyzed in myb house, terribly tormented!” 7And he said to him, “I will come and* heal him.” 8And the centurion answered and* said, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should come in under my roof. But only say the word and my slave will be healed.
Footnotes
- *Here “when” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“entered”)
- aTraditionally “servant”; the Greek term here is one often used of a slave who was regarded with some degree of affection, possibly a personal servant (the parallel passage in Luke 7:7 uses the more common term for slave)
- bLiterally “the”; the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun
- *Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“come”) has been translated as a finite verb
- *Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“answered”) has been translated as a finite verb
