David’s Son and Lord

41 But he said to them, “In what sense do they say that the Christ is David’s son? 42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

‘The Lord said to my Lord,

“Sit at my right hand,

43 until I make your enemies

a footstool for your feet.” ’i

Luke 20:39–47 — The New International Version (NIV)

39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

41 Then Jesus said to them, Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David? 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:

“ ‘The Lord said to my Lord:

Sit at my right hand

43 until I make your enemies

a footstool for your feet.” ’

44 David calls himLord.’ How then can he be his son?”

45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 47 They devour widowshouses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

Luke 20:39–47 — English Standard Version (ESV)

39 Then some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” 40 For they no longer dared to ask him any question.

41 But he said to them, How can they say that the Christ is David’s son? 42 For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,

“ ‘The Lord said to my Lord,

Sit at my right hand,

43 until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’

44 David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?”

45 And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, 46 Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 47 who devour widowshouses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

Luke 20:39–47 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said. 40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all. 41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son? 42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. 44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?

45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, 46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; 47 Which devour widowshouses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

Luke 20:39–47 — New Living Translation (NLT)

39 “Well said, Teacher!” remarked some of the teachers of religious law who were standing there. 40 And then no one dared to ask him any more questions.

41 Then Jesus presented them with a question. Why is it,” he asked, that the Messiah is said to be the son of David? 42 For David himself wrote in the book of Psalms:

The Lord said to my Lord,

Sit in the place of honor at my right hand

43 until I humble your enemies,

making them a footstool under your feet.’

44 Since David called the MessiahLord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?”

45 Then, with the crowds listening, he turned to his disciples and said, 46 Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they like to parade around in flowing robes and love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces. And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and the head table at banquets. 47 Yet they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property and then pretend to be pious by making long prayers in public. Because of this, they will be severely punished.”

Luke 20:39–47 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

39 Then some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 But after that they dared not question Him anymore.

41 And He said to them, How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? 42 Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms:

The Lord said to my Lord,

Sit at My right hand,

43 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’

44 Therefore David calls Him Lord; how is He then his Son?”

45 Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples, 46 Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, 47 who devour widowshouses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

Luke 20:39–47 — New Century Version (NCV)

39 Some of the teachers of the law said, “Teacher, your answer was good.” 40 No one was brave enough to ask him another question.

41 Then Jesus said, “Why do people say that the Christ is the Son of David? 42 In the book of Psalms, David himself says:

‘The Lord said to my Lord,

“Sit by me at my right side,

43 until I put your enemies under your control.” ’

44 David calls the Christ ‘Lord,’ so how can the Christ be his son?”

45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his followers, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around wearing fancy clothes, and they love for people to greet them with respect in the marketplaces. They love to have the most important seats in the synagogues and at feasts. 47 But they cheat widows and steal their houses and then try to make themselves look good by saying long prayers. They will receive a greater punishment.”

Luke 20:39–47 — American Standard Version (ASV)

39 And certain of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well said. 40 For they durst not any more ask him any question.

41 And he said unto them, How say they that the Christ is David’s son?

42 For David himself saith in the book of Psalms,

The Lord said unto my Lord,

Sit thou on my right hand,

43 Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet. 44 David therefore calleth him Lord, and how is he his son?

45 And in the hearing of all the people he said unto his disciples, 46 Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief places at feasts; 47 who devour widowshouses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater condemnation.

These shall receive a severer judgment.

39 Some experts in Moses’ Teachings responded, “Teacher, that was well said.” 40 From that time on, no one dared to ask him another question.

‘The Lord said to my Lord,

“Take the honored position—the one next to me [God the Father] on the heavenly throne—

43 until I put your enemies under your control.” ’

44 David calls him Lord. So how can he be his son?”

45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to the disciples, 46 “Beware of the experts in Moses’ Teachings! They like to walk around in long robes and love to be greeted in the marketplaces, to have the front seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at dinners. 47 They rob widows by taking their houses and then say long prayers to make themselves look good. The experts in Moses’ Teachings will receive the most severe punishment.”
