Obadiah 17–21

17 But on Mount Zion there will be an escape, and it will be holy, and the house of Jacob will take possession of their dispossessors. 18 And the house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau stubble; and they will set them on fire and will consume them. And there will not be a survivor for the house of Esau,” for Yahweh has spoken.

Future Blessing for Israel

19 Those of the Negev will take possession of the mountain of Esau, and those of the Shephelah will possess the land of the Philistines, and they shall take possession of the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, and Benjamin will take possession of Gilead. 20 And the exilesp of this army of the people of Israel will possess Canaan up to Zarephath, and the exilesq of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will take possession of the cities of the Negev. 21 And those who have been saved will go up on Mount Zion to rule the mountain of Esau. And the kingdom will belong tor Yahweh.

Obadiah 17–21 — The New International Version (NIV)

17 But on Mount Zion will be deliverance;

it will be holy,

and Jacob will possess his inheritance.

18 Jacob will be a fire

and Joseph a flame;

Esau will be stubble,

and they will set him on fire and destroy him.

There will be no survivors

from Esau.”

The Lord has spoken.

19 People from the Negev will occupy

the mountains of Esau,

and people from the foothills will possess

the land of the Philistines.

They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria,

and Benjamin will possess Gilead.

20 This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan

will possess the land as far as Zarephath;

the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad

will possess the towns of the Negev.

21 Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion

to govern the mountains of Esau.

And the kingdom will be the Lord’s.

it will be a holy place.

And the people of Israel will come back

to reclaim their inheritance.

18 The people of Israel will be a raging fire,

and Edom a field of dry stubble.

The descendants of Joseph will be a flame

roaring across the field, devouring everything.

There will be no survivors in Edom.

I, the Lord, have spoken!

19 “Then my people living in the Negev

will occupy the mountains of Edom.

Those living in the foothills of Judah

will possess the Philistine plains

and take over the fields of Ephraim and Samaria.

And the people of Benjamin

will occupy the land of Gilead.

20 The exiles of Israel will return to their land

and occupy the Phoenician coast as far north as Zarephath.

The captives from Jerusalem exiled in the north

will return home and resettle the towns of the Negev.

21 Those who have been rescued will go up to Mount Zion in Jerusalem

to rule over the mountains of Edom.

And the Lord himself will be king!”

17 But on Mount Zion some will escape the judgment,

and it will be a holy place.

The people of Jacob will take back their land

from those who took it from them.

18 The people of Jacob will be like a fire

and the people of Joseph like a flame.

But the people of Esau will be like dry stalks.

The people of Jacob will set them on fire and burn them up.

There will be no one left of the people of Esau.”

This will happen because the Lord has said it.

19 Then God’s people will regain southern Judah from Edom;

they will take back the mountains of Edom.

They will take back the western hills

from the Philistines.

They will regain the lands of Ephraim and Samaria,

and Benjamin will take over Gilead.

20 People from Israel who once were forced to leave their homes

will take the land of the Canaanites,

all the way to Zarephath.

People from Judah who once were forced to leave Jerusalem and live in Sepharad

will take back the cities of southern Judah.

21 Powerful warriors will go up on Mount Zion,

where they will rule the people living on Edom’s mountains.

And the kingdom will belong to the Lord.

There will be no one left among the descendants of Esau.”

19 “People from the Negev will take possession of Esau’s mountain.

will take over Esau’s mountains.

Israelites from the western hills

will possess Philistia.

They’ll take over the territories

Israelites from the tribe of Benjamin

will possess the land of Gilead.

20 Some Israelites were forced to leave their homes.

They’ll come back to Canaan and possess

it all the way to the town of Zarephath.

Some people from Jerusalem were taken

to the city of Sepharad.

They’ll return and possess

the towns of the Negev Desert.

21 Leaders from Mount Zion will go

and rule over the mountains of Esau.

And the kingdom will belong to the Lord.
