Hosea 9:5–9

What will you do on the day of the appointed time,

and on the day of the festival of Yahweh?

For look! If they flee from the destruction,

Egypt will gather them;

Memphisc will bury them.

Nettles will possess

their precious things of silver;

thorns will be in their tents.

The days of punishment have come;

the days of retribution have come;

Israel knows!

The prophet is a fool,

the man of the spirit is acting like a madman.

Because of the greatness of your sin,

your hostility is great.

The prophet keeps watch over Ephraim for my God;

the snare of a fowler is on all his ways,

and hostility in the house of his God.

They deeply corrupted themselvesd

as in the days of Gibeah;

he will remember their sin,

he will punish their sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — The New International Version (NIV)

What will you do on the day of your appointed festivals,

on the feast days of the Lord?

Even if they escape from destruction,

Egypt will gather them,

and Memphis will bury them.

Their treasures of silver will be taken over by briers,

and thorns will overrun their tents.

The days of punishment are coming,

the days of reckoning are at hand.

Let Israel know this.

Because your sins are so many

and your hostility so great,

the prophet is considered a fool,

the inspired person a maniac.

The prophet, along with my God,

is the watchman over Ephraim,

yet snares await him on all his paths,

and hostility in the house of his God.

They have sunk deep into corruption,

as in the days of Gibeah.

God will remember their wickedness

and punish them for their sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — English Standard Version (ESV)

What will you do on the day of the appointed festival,

and on the day of the feast of the Lord?

For behold, they are going away from destruction;

but Egypt shall gather them;

Memphis shall bury them.

Nettles shall possess their precious things of silver;

thorns shall be in their tents.

The days of punishment have come;

the days of recompense have come;

Israel shall know it.

The prophet is a fool;

the man of the spirit is mad,

because of your great iniquity

and great hatred.

The prophet is the watchman of Ephraim with my God;

yet a fowler’s snare is on all his ways,

and hatred in the house of his God.

They have deeply corrupted themselves

as in the days of Gibeah:

he will remember their iniquity;

he will punish their sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

What will ye do in the solemn day,

And in the day of the feast of the Lord?

For, lo, they are gone because of destruction:

Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them:

The pleasant places for their silver, nettles shall possess them:

Thorns shall be in their tabernacles.

The days of visitation are come,

The days of recompence are come;

Israel shall know it:

The prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad,

For the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred.

The watchman of Ephraim was with my God:

But the prophet is a snare of a fowler in all his ways,

And hatred in the house of his God.

They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah:

Therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — New Living Translation (NLT)

What then will you do on festival days?

How will you observe the Lord’s festivals?

Even if you escape destruction from Assyria,

Egypt will conquer you, and Memphis will bury you.

Nettles will take over your treasures of silver;

thistles will invade your ruined homes.

The time of Israel’s punishment has come;

the day of payment is here.

Soon Israel will know this all too well.

Because of your great sin and hostility,

you say, “The prophets are crazy

and the inspired men are fools!”

The prophet is a watchman over Israel for my God,

yet traps are laid for him wherever he goes.

He faces hostility even in the house of God.

The things my people do are as depraved

as what they did in Gibeah long ago.

God will not forget.

He will surely punish them for their sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

What will you do in the appointed day,

And in the day of the feast of the Lord?

For indeed they are gone because of destruction.

Egypt shall gather them up;

Memphis shall bury them.

Nettles shall possess their valuables of silver;

Thorns shall be in their tents.

The days of punishment have come;

The days of recompense have come.

Israel knows!

The prophet is a fool,

The spiritual man is insane,

Because of the greatness of your iniquity and great enmity.

The watchman of Ephraim is with my God;

But the prophet is a fowler’s snare in all his ways—

Enmity in the house of his God.

They are deeply corrupted,

As in the days of Gibeah.

He will remember their iniquity;

He will punish their sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — New Century Version (NCV)

What will you do then on the day of feasts

and on the day of the Lord’s festival?

Even if the people are not destroyed,

Egypt will capture them;

Memphis will bury them.

Weeds will grow over their silver treasures,

and thorns will drive them out of their tents.

The time of punishment has come,

the time to pay for sins.

Let Israel know this:

You think the prophet is a fool,

and you say the spiritual person is crazy.

You have sinned very much,

and your hatred is great.

Is Israel a watchman?

Are God’s people prophets?

Everywhere Israel goes, traps are set for him.

He is an enemy in God’s house.

The people of Israel have gone deep into sin

as the people of Gibeah did.

The Lord will remember the evil things they have done,

and he will punish their sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — American Standard Version (ASV)

What will ye do in the day of solemn assembly, and in the day of the feast of Jehovah? For, lo, they are gone away from destruction; yet Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them; their pleasant things of silver, nettles shall possess them; thorns shall be in their tents. The days of visitation are come, the days of recompense are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the man that hath the spirit is mad, for the abundance of thine iniquity, and because the enmity is great. Ephraim was a watchman with my God: as for the prophet, a fowler’s snare is in all his ways, and enmity in the house of his God. They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah: he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

What will ye do in the day of assembly, and in the day of the feast of Jehovah? For behold, they are gone away because of destruction: Egypt shall gather them up, Moph shall bury them: their pleasant things of silver, nettles shall possess them; thorns shall be in their tents.

The days of visitation are come; the days of recompence are come: Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the inspired man is mad, because of the greatness of thine iniquity, and the great enmity. Is Ephraim a watchman with my God? nay the prophet is a fowler’s snare on all his ways, enmity in the house of his God. They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah. He will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

What will they do on the day of an appointed festival

or on the Lord’s festival days?

Even if they escape without being destroyed,

Egypt will capture them

and Memphis will bury them.

Weeds will grow over their silver treasures.

Thorns will grow over their tents.

The time for them to be punished will come.

The time for them to pay for their sins will come.

⸤When this happens,⸥ Israel will know it.

⸤They think that⸥ prophets are fools

and that spiritual people are crazy.

They have sinned a lot, and they are very hostile.

Prophets are God’s watchmen over Ephraim.

Yet, traps are set on every prophet’s path,

and people are hostile in the temple of their God.

People have deeply corrupted themselves as they once did at Gibeah.

God will remember their wickedness

and punish them because of their sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

What will you do on a festival day,

on the day of the Lord’s feast?

For even if they flee from devastation,

Egypt will gather them, and Memphis will bury them.

Thistles will take possession of their precious silver;

thorns will invade their tents.

The days of punishment have come;

the days of retribution have come.

Let Israel recognize it!

The prophet is a fool,

and the inspired man is insane,

because of the magnitude

of your guilt and hostility.

Ephraim’s watchman is with my God.

The prophet encounters a fowler’s snare

on all his ways.

Hostility is in the house of his God!

They have deeply corrupted themselves

as in the days of Gibeah.

He will remember their guilt;

He will punish their sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

What will you do on the day of appointed festival,

and on the day of the festival of the Lord?

For even if they escape destruction,

Egypt shall gather them,

Memphis shall bury them.

Nettles shall possess their precious things of silver;

thorns shall be in their tents.

The days of punishment have come,

the days of recompense have come;

Israel cries,

“The prophet is a fool,

the man of the spirit is mad!”

Because of your great iniquity,

your hostility is great.

The prophet is a sentinel for my God over Ephraim,

yet a fowler’s snare is on all his ways,

and hostility in the house of his God.

They have deeply corrupted themselves

as in the days of Gibeah;

he will remember their iniquity,

he will punish their sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

What will you do when your appointed feasts come?

What will you do on the Lord’s special days?

Some of you will escape without being destroyed.

But you will die in Egypt.

Your bodies will be buried at Memphis.

Weeds will cover your treasures of silver.

Thorns will grow up in your tents.

The time when God will punish you is coming.

The day when he will judge you is near.

I want you to know that.

You have committed many sins.

And you hate me very much.

That’s why you think I’m foolish.

You think I’m crazy.

But the Lord speaks through me.

People of Ephraim, I’m a true prophet.

My God is warning you through me.

But you set traps for me everywhere I go.

You hate me so much

you even wait for me in God’s house.

You have sunk very deep into sin,

just as our people did at Gibeah long ago.

God will remember the evil things you have done.

He will punish you for your sins.

Hosea 9:5–9 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

What will you do on the day of the appointed festival

And on the day of the feast of the Lord?

For behold, they will go because of destruction;

Egypt will gather them up, Memphis will bury them.

Weeds will take over their treasures of silver;

Thorns will be in their tents.

The days of punishment have come,

The days of retribution have come;

Let Israel know this!

The prophet is a fool,

The inspired man is demented,

Because of the grossness of your iniquity,

And because your hostility is so great.

Ephraim was a watchman with my God, a prophet;

Yet the snare of a bird catcher is in all his ways,

And there is only hostility in the house of his God.

They have gone deep in depravity

As in the days of Gibeah;

He will remember their iniquity,

He will punish their sins.
