Ezekiel 28:6–9

6 “ ‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“ ‘Because you think you are wise,

as wise as a god,

7 I am going to bring foreigners against you,

the most ruthless of nations;

they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom

and pierce your shining splendor.

8 They will bring you down to the pit,

and you will die a violent death

in the heart of the seas.

9 Will you then say, “I am a god,”

in the presence of those who kill you?

You will be but a mortal, not a god,

in the hands of those who slay you.

6 therefore thus says the Lord God:

Because you make your heart

like the heart of a god,

7 therefore, behold, I will bring foreigners upon you,

the most ruthless of the nations;

and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom

and defile your splendor.

8 They shall thrust you down into the pit,

and you shall die the death of the slain

in the heart of the seas.

9 Will you still say, ‘I am a god,’

in the presence of those who kill you,

though you are but a man, and no god,

in the hands of those who slay you?

6 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God; 7 Behold, therefore I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness. 8 They shall bring thee down to the pit, and thou shalt die the deaths of them that are slain in the midst of the seas. 9 Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and no God, in the hand of him that slayeth thee.

6 “Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

Because you think you are as wise as a god,

7 I will now bring against you a foreign army,

the terror of the nations.

They will draw their swords against your marvelous wisdom

and defile your splendor!

8 They will bring you down to the pit,

and you will die in the heart of the sea,

pierced with many wounds.

9 Will you then boast, ‘I am a god!’

to those who kill you?

To them you will be no god

but merely a man!

6 ‘Therefore thus says the Lord God:

“Because you have set your heart as the heart of a god,

7 Behold, therefore, I will bring strangers against you,

The most terrible of the nations;

And they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom,

And defile your splendor.

8 They shall throw you down into the Pit,

And you shall die the death of the slain

In the midst of the seas.

9 “Will you still say before him who slays you,

‘I am a god’?

But you shall be a man, and not a god,

In the hand of him who slays you.

6 “ ‘So this is what the Lord God says:

You think you are wise

like a god,

7 but I will bring foreign people against you,

the cruelest nation.

They will pull out their swords

and destroy all that your wisdom has built,

and they will dishonor your greatness.

8 They will kill you;

you will die a terrible death

like those who are killed at sea.

9 While they are killing you,

you will not be able to say anymore, “I am a god.”

You will be only a human, not a god,

when your murderers kill you.

6 therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because thou hast set thy heart as the heart of God, 7 therefore, behold, I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations; and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness. 8 They shall bring thee down to the pit; and thou shalt die the death of them that are slain, in the heart of the seas. 9 Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou art man, and not God, in the hand of him that woundeth thee.

6 Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because thou hast set thy heart as the heart of God, 7 therefore behold, I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations; and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall tarnish thy brightness. 8 They shall bring thee down to the pit, and thou shalt die the deaths of those that are slain in the heart of the seas. 9 Wilt thou then say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and not •God, in the hand of him that pierceth thee.

6 “ ‘This is what the Almighty Lord says: 

You think you are wise like God. 

7 That is why I am going to bring foreigners against you, 

the most ruthless foreigners among the nations. 

They will draw their swords against your fine wisdom 

and dishonor your greatness. 

8 They will throw you into a pit, 

and you will die a violent death in the sea. 

9 You will no longer say that you are a god 

when you face those who kill you. 

You will be a human, not a god, in the hands of those who kill you. 

6 Therefore this is what the Lord God says:

Because you regard your heart as that of a god,

7 I am about to bring strangers against you,

ruthless men from the nations.

They will draw their swords

against your magnificent wisdom

and will defile your splendor.

8 They will bring you down to the Pit,

and you will die a violent death

in the heart of the sea.

9 Will you still say, ‘I am a god,’

in the presence of those who kill you?

Yet you will be only a man, not a god,

in the hands of those who kill you.

6 Therefore thus says the Lord God:

Because you compare your mind

with the mind of a god,

7 therefore, I will bring strangers against you,

the most terrible of the nations;

they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom

and defile your splendor.

8 They shall thrust you down to the Pit,

and you shall die a violent death

in the heart of the seas.

9 Will you still say, “I am a god,”

in the presence of those who kill you,

though you are but a mortal and no god,

in the hands of those who pierce you?

6 The Lord and King says,

“You think you are wise.

In fact, you claim to be as wise as a god.

7 So I am going to bring strangers against you.

They will not show you any pity at all.

They will use their swords against your beauty and wisdom.

They will strike down your shining glory.

8 They will bring you down to the grave.

You will die a horrible death

in the middle of the sea.

9 Then will you say, ‘I am a god’?

Will you say that to those who kill you?

You will be only a man to those who kill you.

You will not be a god to them.

6 Therefore thus says the Lord God,

‘Because you have made your heart

Like the heart of God,

7 Therefore, behold, I will bring strangers upon you,

The most ruthless of the nations.

And they will draw their swords

Against the beauty of your wisdom

And defile your splendor.

8 ‘They will bring you down to the pit,

And you will die the death of those who are slain

In the heart of the seas.

9 ‘Will you still say, “I am a god,”

In the presence of your slayer,

Though you are a man and not God,

In the hands of those who wound you?
