Job 36:15–19 — New International Version (2011) (NIV)
15 But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering;
he speaks to them in their affliction.
16 “He is wooing you from the jaws of distress
to a spacious place free from restriction,
to the comfort of your table laden with choice food.
17 But now you are laden with the judgment due the wicked;
judgment and justice have taken hold of you.
18 Be careful that no one entices you by riches;
do not let a large bribe turn you aside.
19 Would your wealth or even all your mighty efforts
sustain you so you would not be in distress?
Job 36:15–19 — English Standard Version (ESV)
15 He delivers the afflicted by their affliction
and opens their ear by adversity.
16 He also allured you out of distress
into a broad place where there was no cramping,
and what was set on your table was full of fatness.
17 “But you are full of the judgment on the wicked;
judgment and justice seize you.
18 Beware lest wrath entice you into scoffing,
and let not the greatness of the ransom turn you aside.
19 Will your cry for help avail to keep you from distress,
or all the force of your strength?
Job 36:15–19 — New Living Translation (NLT)
15 But by means of their suffering, he rescues those who suffer.
For he gets their attention through adversity.
16 “God is leading you away from danger, Job,
to a place free from distress.
He is setting your table with the best food.
17 But you are obsessed with whether the godless will be judged.
Don’t worry, judgment and justice will be upheld.
18 But watch out, or you may be seduced by wealth.
Don’t let yourself be bribed into sin.
19 Could all your wealth
or all your mighty efforts
keep you from distress?
Job 36:15–19 — The New King James Version (NKJV)
15 He delivers the poor in their affliction,
And opens their ears in oppression.
16 “Indeed He would have brought you out of dire distress,
Into a broad place where there is no restraint;
And what is set on your table would be full of richness.
17 But you are filled with the judgment due the wicked;
Judgment and justice take hold of you.
18 Because there is wrath, beware lest He take you away with one blow;
For a large ransom would not help you avoid it.
19 Will your riches,
Or all the mighty forces,
Keep you from distress?
Job 36:15–19 — New Century Version (NCV)
15 But God saves those who suffer through their suffering;
he gets them to listen through their pain.
16 “God is gently calling you from the jaws of trouble
to an open place of freedom
where he has set your table full of the best food.
17 But now you are being punished like the wicked;
you are getting justice.
18 Be careful! Don’t be led away from God by riches;
don’t let much money turn you away.
19 Neither your wealth nor all your great strength
will keep you out of trouble.
Job 36:15–19 — American Standard Version (ASV)
15 He delivereth the afflicted by their affliction,
And openeth their ear in oppression.
16 Yea, he would have allured thee out of distress
Into a broad place, where there is no straitness;
And that which is set on thy table would be full of fatness.
17 But thou art full of the judgment of the wicked:
Judgment and justice take hold on thee.
18 For let not wrath stir thee up against chastisements;
Neither let the greatness of the ransom turn thee aside.
19 Will thy cry avail, that thou be not in distress,
Or all the forces of thy strength?
Job 36:15–19 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)
15 But he delivereth the afflicted in his affliction, and openeth their ear in their oppression. 16 Even so would he have allured thee out of the jaws of distress into a broad place, where there is no straitness; and the supply of thy table would be full of fatness. 17 But thou art full of the judgments of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on thee. 18 Because there is wrath, beware lest it take thee away through chastisement: then a great ransom could not avail thee. 19 Will he esteem thy riches? Not gold, nor all the resources of strength!
Job 36:15–19 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
15 He rescues suffering people through their suffering,
and he opens their ears through distress.
16 “Yes, he lured you away from the jaws of trouble
into an open area where you were not restrained,
and your table was covered with rich foods.
17 But you are given the judgment evil people deserve.
A fair judgment will be upheld.
18 Be careful that you are not led astray with riches.
Don’t let a large bribe turn you ⸤to evil ways⸥.
19 Will your riches save you from having to suffer?
Will all your mighty strength help you?
Job 36:15–19 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
15 God rescues the afflicted by their affliction;
He instructs them by their torment.
16 Indeed, He lured you from the jaws of distress
to a spacious and unconfined place.
Your table was spread with choice food.
17 Yet now you are obsessed with the judgment due the wicked;
judgment and justice have seized you.
18 Be careful that no one lures you with riches;
do not let a large ransom lead you astray.
19 Can your wealth or all your physical exertion
keep you from distress?
Job 36:15–19 — New Revised Standard Version: Updated Edition (NRSVue)
15 He delivers the afflicted by their affliction
and opens their ear by adversity.
16 He also allured you out of distress
into a broad place where there was no constraint,
and what was set on your table was full of fatness.
17 “But you are obsessed with the case of the wicked;
judgment and justice seize you.
18 Beware that wrath does not entice you into scoffing,
and do not let the greatness of the ransom turn you aside.
19 Will your cry avail to keep you from distress,
or will all the force of your strength?
Job 36:15–19 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)
15 He delivers the afflicted by his misery,
and he opens their ears by the adversity.
16 And what’s more, he allured you out of distress
into a broad place, where in place of it was no constraint;
and what was set on your table is full of fatness.
17 But you are obsessed with the judgment of the wicked;
judgment and justice take hold of you.
18 Yes, it is wrath, so that it will not incite you into mockery;
and do not let the ransom’s greatness turn you aside.
19 Will your cry for help sustain you without distress,
or all the efforts of your strength?
Job 36:15–19 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)
15 But God saves suffering people while they are suffering.
He speaks to them while they are hurting.
16 “Job, he wants to take you out of the jaws of trouble.
He wants to bring you to a wide and safe place.
He’d like to seat you at a table that is loaded with the best food.
17 But now you are loaded down
with the punishment sinners will receive.
You have been judged fairly.
18 Be careful that no one tempts you with riches.
Don’t take money from people who want special favors,
no matter how much it is.
19 Can your wealth keep you out of trouble?
Can all of your mighty efforts keep you going?
Job 36:15–19 — New American Standard Bible (1995) (NASB95)
15 “He delivers the afflicted in their affliction,
And opens their ear in time of oppression.
16 “Then indeed, He enticed you from the mouth of distress,
Instead of it, a broad place with no constraint;
And that which was set on your table was full of fatness.
17 “But you were full of judgment on the wicked;
Judgment and justice take hold of you.
18 “Beware that wrath does not entice you to scoffing;
And do not let the greatness of the ransom turn you aside.
19 “Will your riches keep you from distress,
Or all the forces of your strength?
