Jeremiah 50:43–44

43  The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them,

And his hands waxed feeble:

fAnguish took hold of him,

And pangs as of a woman in travail.

44  gBehold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan

Unto the habitation of the strong:

But I will make them suddenly run away from her:

And who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her?

For who is like me? and who will ||appoint me the time?

And who is hthat shepherd that will stand before me?

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — The New International Version (NIV)

43 The king of Babylon has heard reports about them,

and his hands hang limp.

Anguish has gripped him,

pain like that of a woman in labor.

44 Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets

to a rich pastureland,

I will chase Babylon from its land in an instant.

Who is the chosen one I will appoint for this?

Who is like me and who can challenge me?

And what shepherd can stand against me?”

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — English Standard Version (ESV)

43 “The king of Babylon heard the report of them,

and his hands fell helpless;

anguish seized him,

pain as of a woman in labor.

44 “Behold, like a lion coming up from the thicket of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make them run away from her, and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — New Living Translation (NLT)

43 The king of Babylon has heard reports about the enemy,

and he is weak with fright.

Pangs of anguish have gripped him,

like those of a woman in labor.

44 “I will come like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan,

leaping on the sheep in the pasture.

I will chase Babylon from its land,

and I will appoint the leader of my choice.

For who is like me, and who can challenge me?

What ruler can oppose my will?”

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

43 “The king of Babylon has heard the report about them,

And his hands grow feeble;

Anguish has taken hold of him,

Pangs as of a woman in childbirth.

44 “Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the floodplain of the Jordan

Against the dwelling place of the strong;

But I will make them suddenly run away from her.

And who is a chosen man that I may appoint over her?

For who is like Me?

Who will arraign Me?

And who is that shepherd

Who will withstand Me?”

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — New Century Version (NCV)

43 The king of Babylon heard about those armies,

and he became helpless with fear.

Distress has gripped him.

His pain is like that of a woman giving birth to a baby.

44 “Like a lion coming up from the thick bushes near the Jordan River

to attack a strong pen for sheep,

I will suddenly chase the people of Babylon from their land.

Who is the one I have chosen to do this?

There is no one like me,

no one who can take me to court.

None of their leaders can stand up against me.”

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — American Standard Version (ASV)

43 The king of Babylon hath heard the tidings of them, and his hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail. 44 Behold, the enemy shall come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd that can stand before me?

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

43 The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands wax feeble; trouble hath taken hold of him, pangs as of a woman in travail. 44 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of the Jordan against the strong habitation; for I will make him suddenly run away from it; and who is a chosen man whom I may appoint over her? For who is like me? and who will assign me a time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

43 The king of Babylon has heard reports about them, and he loses courage.

Anguish will grip him as pain grips a woman in labor.

44 I will suddenly chase them from their places

like a lion coming out of the jungle

along the Jordan River into pastureland.

I will appoint over Babylon whomever I choose.

Who is like me? Who can challenge me?

Is there any leader who can stand up to me?

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

43 The king of Babylon has heard reports about them,

and his hands fall helpless.

Distress has seized him—

pain, like a woman in labor.

44 “Look, it will be like a lion coming from the thickets of the Jordan to the watered grazing land. Indeed, I will chase Babylon away from her land in a flash. I will appoint whoever is chosen for her. For who is like Me? Who will summon Me? Who is the shepherd who can stand against Me?”

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

43 The king of Babylon heard news of them,

and his hands fell helpless;

anguish seized him,

pain like that of a woman in labor.

44 Like a lion coming up from the thickets of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly chase them away from her; and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who can summon me? Who is the shepherd who can stand before me?

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

43 The king of Babylon heard their report

and his hands grew slack.

Anxiety has seized him,

fear and pain like the woman who gives birth.

44 Look, like a lion he comes up from the thickets of the Jordan

against a pastureland by a constantly flowing stream,

so I will chase them away quickly from her,

and I will appoint whoever is chosen over her.

For who is like me, and who can summon me,

and who is this shepherd who can stand before me?

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

43 The king of Babylonia has heard reports about them.

His hands can’t help him.

He is in great pain.

It is like the pain of a woman having a baby.

44 I will be like a lion coming up from the bushes by the Jordan River.

I will hunt in rich grasslands.

I will chase the people of Babylon from their land in an instant.

What nation will I choose to do it?

Which one will I appoint?

Is anyone like me? Who would dare to argue with me?

What leader can stand against me?”

Jeremiah 50:43–44 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

43 “The king of Babylon has heard the report about them,

And his hands hang limp;

Distress has gripped him,

Agony like a woman in childbirth.

44 Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thicket of the Jordan to a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will make them run away from it, and whoever is chosen I will appoint over it. For who is like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd who can stand before Me?”
