Jeremiah 23:18–24

18 But which of them has stood in the council of the Lord

to see or to hear his word?

Who has listened and heard his word?

19 See, the storm of the Lord

will burst out in wrath,

a whirlwind swirling down

on the heads of the wicked.

20 The anger of the Lord will not turn back

until he fully accomplishes

the purposes of his heart.

In days to come

you will understand it clearly.

21 I did not send these prophets,

yet they have run with their message;

I did not speak to them,

yet they have prophesied.

22 But if they had stood in my council,

they would have proclaimed my words to my people

and would have turned them from their evil ways

and from their evil deeds.

23 “Am I only a God nearby,”

declares the Lord,

“and not a God far away?

24 Who can hide in secret places

so that I cannot see them?”

declares the Lord.

“Do not I fill heaven and earth?”

declares the Lord.

18 For who among them has stood in the council of the Lord

to see and to hear his word,

or who has paid attention to his word and listened?

19 Behold, the storm of the Lord!

Wrath has gone forth,

a whirling tempest;

it will burst upon the head of the wicked.

20 The anger of the Lord will not turn back

until he has executed and accomplished

the intents of his heart.

In the latter days you will understand it clearly.

21 “I did not send the prophets,

yet they ran;

I did not speak to them,

yet they prophesied.

22 But if they had stood in my council,

then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,

and they would have turned them from their evil way,

and from the evil of their deeds.

23 “Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away? 24 Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord.

18 “Have any of these prophets been in the Lord’s presence

to hear what he is really saying?

Has even one of them cared enough to listen?

19 Look! The Lord’s anger bursts out like a storm,

a whirlwind that swirls down on the heads of the wicked.

20 The anger of the Lord will not diminish

until it has finished all he has planned.

In the days to come

you will understand all this very clearly.

21 “I have not sent these prophets,

yet they run around claiming to speak for me.

I have given them no message,

yet they go on prophesying.

22 If they had stood before me and listened to me,

they would have spoken my words,

and they would have turned my people

from their evil ways and deeds.

23 Am I a God who is only close at hand?” says the Lord.

“No, I am far away at the same time.

24 Can anyone hide from me in a secret place?

Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?”

says the Lord.

18 For who has stood in the counsel of the Lord,

And has perceived and heard His word?

Who has marked His word and heard it?

19 Behold, a whirlwind of the Lord has gone forth in fury—

A violent whirlwind!

It will fall violently on the head of the wicked.

20 The anger of the Lord will not turn back

Until He has executed and performed the thoughts of His heart.

In the latter days you will understand it perfectly.

21 “I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran.

I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.

22 But if they had stood in My counsel,

And had caused My people to hear My words,

Then they would have turned them from their evil way

And from the evil of their doings.

23 “Am I a God near at hand,” says the Lord,

“And not a God afar off?

24 Can anyone hide himself in secret places,

So I shall not see him?” says the Lord;

“Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord.

18 But none of these prophets has stood in the meeting of angels

to see or hear the message of the Lord.

None of them has paid close attention to his message.

19 Look, the punishment from the Lord

will come like a storm.

His anger will be like a hurricane.

It will come swirling down on the heads of those wicked people.

20 The Lord’s anger will not stop

until he finishes what he plans to do.

When that day is over,

you will understand this clearly.

21 I did not send those prophets,

but they ran to tell their message.

I did not speak to them,

but they prophesied anyway.

22 But if they had stood in the meeting of angels,

they would have told my message to my people.

They would have turned the people from their evil ways

and from doing evil.

23 “I am a God who is near,” says the Lord.

“I am also a God who is far away.”

24 “No one can hide

where I cannot see him,” says the Lord.

“I fill all of heaven and earth,” says the Lord.

18 For who hath stood in the council of Jehovah, that he should perceive and hear his word? who hath marked my word, and heard it? 19 Behold, the tempest of Jehovah, even his wrath, is gone forth, yea, a whirling tempest: it shall burst upon the head of the wicked. 20 The anger of Jehovah shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the intents of his heart: in the latter days ye shall understand it perfectly. 21 I sent not these prophets, yet they ran: I spake not unto them, yet they prophesied. 22 But if they had stood in my council, then had they caused my people to hear my words, and had turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.

23 Am I a God at hand, saith Jehovah, and not a God afar off? 24 Can any hide himself in secret places so that I shall not see him? saith Jehovah. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith Jehovah.

18 For who hath stood in the council of Jehovah, so that he hath perceived and heard his word? who hath hearkened to his word and listened? 19 Behold, a tempest of Jehovah, fury is gone forth, yea, a whirling storm: it shall whirl down upon the head of the wicked. 20 The anger of Jehovah shall not return, until he have executed, and until he have performed the purposes of his heart: at the end of the days ye shall understand it clearly. 21 I did not send the prophets, yet they ran; I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. 22 But if they had stood in my council, and had caused my people to hear my words, then would they have turned them from their evil way and from the wickedness of their doings. 23 Am I a God at hand, saith Jehovah, and not a God afar off? 24 Can any hide himself in secret places, that I shall not see him? saith Jehovah. Do not I fill the heavens and the earth? saith Jehovah.

18 Who is in the Lord’s inner circle 

and sees and hears his word? 

Who pays attention and listens to his word? 

19 The storm of the Lord will come with his anger. 

Like a windstorm, it will swirl down on the heads of the wicked. 

20 The anger of the Lord will not turn back 

until he has done everything he intends to do. 

In the last days you will understand this clearly. 

21 I didn’t send these prophets, 

yet they ran ⸤with their message⸥. 

I didn’t speak to them, 

yet they prophesied. 

22 If they had been in my inner circle, 

they would have announced my words to my people. 

They would have turned back from their evil ways 

and the evil they have done. 

23 “I am a God who is near. 

I am also a God who is far away,” declares the Lord. 

24 “No one can hide so that I can’t see him,” declares the Lord. 

“I fill heaven and earth!” declares the Lord.

to see and hear His word?

Who has paid attention to His word and obeyed?

19 Look, a storm from the Lord!

Wrath has gone out,

a whirling storm.

It will whirl about the heads of the wicked.

20 The Lord’s anger will not turn back

until He has completely fulfilled the purposes of His heart.

In time to come you will understand it clearly.

21 I did not send these prophets,

yet they ran with a message.

I did not speak to them,

yet they prophesied.

22 If they had really stood in My council,

they would have enabled My people to hear My words

and would have turned them back from their evil ways

and their evil deeds.

23 “Am I a God who is only near” —this is the Lord’s declaration—“and not a God who is far away? 24 Can a man hide himself in secret places where I cannot see him?” —the Lord’s declaration. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” —the Lord’s declaration.

18 For who has stood in the council of the Lord

so as to see and to hear his word?

Who has given heed to his word so as to proclaim it?

19 Look, the storm of the Lord!

Wrath has gone forth,

a whirling tempest;

it will burst upon the head of the wicked.

20 The anger of the Lord will not turn back

until he has executed and accomplished

the intents of his mind.

In the latter days you will understand it clearly.

18 For who has stood in the council of Yahweh,

that he has seen and heard his word?

Who has listened attentively to his word

and heard it?

19 Look, the storm of Yahweh has gone forth in wrath,

even a whirling tempest.

It will whirl upon the head of the wicked.

20 The anger of Yahweh will not turn back

until his doing and until his keeping the plans of his mind.

In latter days you will look closely at it with understanding.

21 I have not sent the prophets, yet they ran.

I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.

22 But if they had stood in my council,

then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,

and they would have caused them to turn from their evil way,

and from the evil of their deeds.

23 Am I a God from near,” declares Yahweh,

“and not a God from far?

24 Or can a person hide himself in secret places

and I cannot see him?” declares Yahweh.

“Do I not fill up the heaven and the earth?” declares Yahweh.

18 But which of them has ever stood in my courts?

Have they been there to see a vision or hear my message?

Who has listened and heard my message there?

19 A storm will burst out

because of my burning anger.

A windstorm will sweep down

on the heads of sinful people.

20 My anger will not turn back.

I will accomplish everything

I plan to do.

In days to come

you will understand it clearly.

21 I did not send those prophets.

But they have run to tell you their message anyway.

I did not speak to them.

But they have still prophesied.

22 Suppose they had stood in my courts.

Then they would have announced my message to my people.

They would have turned my people from their evil ways.

They would have turned them away from their sins.

23 “Am I only a God who is nearby?”

announces the Lord.

“Am I not a God who is also far away?

24 Can anyone hide in secret places

so that I can’t see him?”

announces the Lord.

“Don’t I fill heaven and earth?”

announces the Lord.

18 “But who has stood in the council of the Lord,

That he should see and hear His word?

Who has given heed to His word and listened?

19 “Behold, the storm of the Lord has gone forth in wrath,

Even a whirling tempest;

It will swirl down on the head of the wicked.

20 “The anger of the Lord will not turn back

Until He has performed and carried out the purposes of His heart;

In the last days you will clearly understand it.

21 “I did not send these prophets,

But they ran.

I did not speak to them,

But they prophesied.

22 “But if they had stood in My council,

Then they would have announced My words to My people,

And would have turned them back from their evil way

And from the evil of their deeds.

23 “Am I a God who is near,” declares the Lord,

“And not a God far off?

24 “Can a man hide himself in hiding places

So I do not see him?” declares the Lord.

“Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the Lord.
