Psalm 88:13–18 — The New International Version (NIV)

13 But I cry to you for help, Lord;

in the morning my prayer comes before you.

14 Why, Lord, do you reject me

and hide your face from me?

15 From my youth I have suffered and been close to death;

I have borne your terrors and am in despair.

16 Your wrath has swept over me;

your terrors have destroyed me.

17 All day long they surround me like a flood;

they have completely engulfed me.

18 You have taken from me friend and neighbor—

darkness is my closest friend.

Psalm 88:13–18 — English Standard Version (ESV)

13 But I, O Lord, cry to you;

in the morning my prayer comes before you.

14 O Lord, why do you cast my soul away?

Why do you hide your face from me?

15 Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,

I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.

16 Your wrath has swept over me;

your dreadful assaults destroy me.

17 They surround me like a flood all day long;

they close in on me together.

18 You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me;

my companions have become darkness.

Psalm 88:13–18 — New Living Translation (NLT)

13 O Lord, I cry out to you.

I will keep on pleading day by day.

14 O Lord, why do you reject me?

Why do you turn your face from me?

15 I have been sick and close to death since my youth.

I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.

16 Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me.

Your terrors have paralyzed me.

17 They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long.

They have engulfed me completely.

18 You have taken away my companions and loved ones.

Darkness is my closest friend.

Psalm 88:13–18 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

13 But to You I have cried out, O Lord,

And in the morning my prayer comes before You.

14 Lord, why do You cast off my soul?

Why do You hide Your face from me?

15 I have been afflicted and ready to die from my youth;

I suffer Your terrors;

I am distraught.

16 Your fierce wrath has gone over me;

Your terrors have cut me off.

17 They came around me all day long like water;

They engulfed me altogether.

18 Loved one and friend You have put far from me,

And my acquaintances into darkness.

Psalm 88:13–18 — New Century Version (NCV)

13 But, Lord, I have called out to you for help;

every morning I pray to you.

14 Lord, why do you reject me?

Why do you hide from me?

15 I have been weak and dying since I was young.

I suffer from your terrors, and I am helpless.

16 You have been angry with me,

and your terrors have destroyed me.

17 They surround me daily like a flood;

they are all around me.

18 You have taken away my loved ones and friends.

Darkness is my only friend.

Psalm 88:13–18 — American Standard Version (ASV)

13 But unto thee, O Jehovah, have I cried;

And in the morning shall my prayer come before thee.

14 Jehovah, why castest thou off my soul?

Why hidest thou thy face from me?

15 I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up:

While I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.

16 Thy fierce wrath is gone over me;

Thy terrors have cut me off.

17 They came round about me like water all the day long;

They compassed me about together.

And mine acquaintance into darkness.

Psalm 88:13–18 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

13 But as for me, Jehovah, I cry unto thee, and in the morning my prayer cometh before thee. 14 Why, O Jehovah, castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me? 15 I am afflicted and expiring from my youth up; I suffer thy terrors, and I am distracted. 16 Thy fierce anger hath gone over me; thy terrors have brought me to nought: 17 They have surrounded me all the day like water; they have compassed me about together. 18 Lover and associate hast thou put far from me: my familiar friends are darkness.

Why do you hide your face from me?

15 Ever since I was young, I have been suffering and near death.

I have endured your terrors, and now I am in despair.

16 Your burning anger has swept over me.

Your terrors have destroyed me.

17 They swirl around me all day long like water.

I have been afflicted and near death.

I suffer Your horrors; I am desperate.

You have made me suffer terrible things.

I have lost all hope.
