Matthew 10–12

10 And awhen he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power ||against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. 2 bNow the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, cwho is called Peter, and dAndrew his brother; eJames the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and fMatthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4 Simon gthe Canaanite, and Judas hIscariot, who also betrayed him. 5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into ithe way of the Gentiles, and into any city of kthe Samaritans enter ye not: 6 lBut go rather to the mlost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 nAnd as ye go, preach, saying, oThe kingdom of heaven is at hand. 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: pfreely ye have received, freely give. 9 q||Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor rbrass in your purses, 10 Nor sscrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet ||staves: tfor the workman is worthy of his meat. 11 And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, inquire who in it is uworthy; and there abide till ye go thence. 12 And when ye come into an house, wsalute it. 13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not uworthy, let your peace xreturn to you. 14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, yshake off the dust of your feet. 15 zVerily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

16 aBehold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore bwise as serpents, and ||harmless as doves. 17 But beware of men: for cthey will deliver you up to the dgcouncils, and ethey will scourge you in their gsynagogues; 18 And ye shall be brought before fgovernors and kings for my sake, fffor a testimony against them and the Gentiles. 19 gBut when they deliver you up, htake no thought how or what ye shall speak: ifor it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. 20 kFor it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. 21 lAnd the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. 22 mAnd ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: nbut he that endureth to the end shall be saved. 23 But when they nnpersecute you in this city, oflee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not ||have gone over the cities of Israel, ptill the Son of man be come. 24 qThe disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. 25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. rIf they have called the master of the house †Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? 26 Fear them not therefore: sfor there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. 27 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. 28 And tfear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather ufear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in xhell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a ||farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But ythe very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear ye not therefore, zye are of more value than many sparrows. 32 Whosoever therefore shall aconfess me before men, bhim will I confess also before cmy Father which is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall ddeny me before men, him will I also deny before cmy Father which is in heaven.

34 eThink not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36 And fa man’s foes shall be they of his own household. 37 gHe that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 hAnd he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. 39 iHe that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

40 kHe that receiveth you receiveth me, and lhe that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. 41 He mthat receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 nAnd whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

11 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. 2 aNow when John had heard bin the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, 3 And said unto him, Art thou che that should come, or do we look for another? 4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: 5 dThe blind receive their sight, and dthe lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and dthe deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and ethe poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not fbe offended in me.

7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out ffinto the wilderness to see? gA reed shaken with the wind? 8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 But what went ye out for to see? hA prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he, of whom it is written, iBehold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are kborn of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 lAnd from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven ||suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 lFor all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if ye will receive it, this is mElias, which was for to come. 15 nHe that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

16 oBut whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their oofellows, 17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have pmourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. 18 For John came neither qeating nor rdrinking, and they say, He hath a devil. 19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, sa friend of sspublicans and sinners. But wisdom tis justified uof vher children.

20 wThen began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: 21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, xBethsaida! yfor if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in zTyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in asackcloth and bashes. 22 cBut I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for zTyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. 23 And thou, Capernaum, dwhich art exalted unto heaven, eshalt be brought down to hell: yfor if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 cBut I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

25 fAt that time Jesus ganswered and said, I thank thee, hO Father, Lord of heaven and earth, ibecause thou hast hid these things kfrom the wise and prudent, and hast mrevealed them unto babes. 26 Even so, hFather: for so it seemed good in thy sight. 27 nAll things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, osave the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

28 Come unto pme, all ye that labour and are qheavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 rTake my yoke upon you, and slearn of me; for I am tmeek and lowly in heart: and uye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For xmy yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

12 At that time aJesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and bbegan to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that cwhich is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day. 3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read dwhat David did, when he was an hungred, and ethey that were with him; 4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat fthe shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, gbut only for the priests? 5 Or have ye not read hin the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? 6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one igreater than the temple. 7 But if ye had known kwhat this meaneth, lI will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

9 And when he was departed thence, mhe went into their synagogue: 10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, nIs it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. 11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? 12 oHow much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. 13 Then saith …
