Job 28:20–28

20  lWhence then cometh wisdom?

And where is the place of understanding?

21  Seeing it is hid from the eyes mof all living,

And kept close from the fowls of the ||air.

22  nDestruction and death say,

We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.

23  oGod understandeth the way thereof,

And he knoweth the place thereof.

24  For he looketh to the ends of the earth,

And seeth under the whole heaven;

25  To pmake the weight for the winds;

And he weigheth the waters by measure.

26  qWhen he made a rdecree for the rain,

And a sway for the lightning of the thunder:

27  Then did he see it, and ||declare it;

He prepared it, yea, and searched it out.

28  And unto man he said, Behold, tthe fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;

And uto depart from evil is understanding.

Job 28:20–28 — The New International Version (NIV)

20 Where then does wisdom come from?

Where does understanding dwell?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing,

concealed even from the birds in the sky.

22 Destruction and Death say,

“Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.”

23 God understands the way to it

and he alone knows where it dwells,

24 for he views the ends of the earth

and sees everything under the heavens.

25 When he established the force of the wind

and measured out the waters,

26 when he made a decree for the rain

and a path for the thunderstorm,

27 then he looked at wisdom and appraised it;

he confirmed it and tested it.

28 And he said to the human race,

“The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom,

and to shun evil is understanding.”

Job 28:20–28 — English Standard Version (ESV)

20 “From where, then, does wisdom come?

And where is the place of understanding?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of all living

and concealed from the birds of the air.

22 Abaddon and Death say,

‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’

23 “God understands the way to it,

and he knows its place.

24 For he looks to the ends of the earth

and sees everything under the heavens.

25 When he gave to the wind its weight

and apportioned the waters by measure,

26 when he made a decree for the rain

and a way for the lightning of the thunder,

27 then he saw it and declared it;

he established it, and searched it out.

28 And he said to man,

‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,

and to turn away from evil is understanding.’ ”

Job 28:20–28 — New Living Translation (NLT)

20 “But do people know where to find wisdom?

Where can they find understanding?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of all humanity.

Even the sharp-eyed birds in the sky cannot discover it.

22 Destruction and Death say,

‘We’ve heard only rumors of where wisdom can be found.’

23 “God alone understands the way to wisdom;

he knows where it can be found,

24 for he looks throughout the whole earth

and sees everything under the heavens.

25 He decided how hard the winds should blow

and how much rain should fall.

26 He made the laws for the rain

and laid out a path for the lightning.

27 Then he saw wisdom and evaluated it.

He set it in place and examined it thoroughly.

28 And this is what he says to all humanity:

‘The fear of the Lord is true wisdom;

to forsake evil is real understanding.’ ”

Job 28:20–28 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

20 “From where then does wisdom come?

And where is the place of understanding?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of all living,

And concealed from the birds of the air.

22 Destruction and Death say,

‘We have heard a report about it with our ears.’

23 God understands its way,

And He knows its place.

24 For He looks to the ends of the earth,

And sees under the whole heavens,

25 To establish a weight for the wind,

And apportion the waters by measure.

26 When He made a law for the rain,

And a path for the thunderbolt,

27 Then He saw wisdom and declared it;

He prepared it, indeed, He searched it out.

28 And to man He said,

‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,

And to depart from evil is understanding.’ ”

Job 28:20–28 — New Century Version (NCV)

20 “So where does wisdom come from,

and where does understanding live?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing,

even from the birds of the air.

22 The places of destruction and death say,

‘We have heard reports about it.’

23 Only God understands the way to wisdom,

and he alone knows where it lives,

24 because he looks to the farthest parts of the earth

and sees everything under the sky.

25 When God gave power to the wind

and measured the water,

26 when he made rules for the rain

and set a path for a thunderstorm to follow,

27 then he looked at wisdom and decided its worth;

he set wisdom up and tested it.

28 Then he said to humans,

‘The fear of the Lord is wisdom;

to stay away from evil is understanding.’ ”

Job 28:20–28 — American Standard Version (ASV)

20 Whence then cometh wisdom?

And where is the place of understanding?

21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living,

And kept close from the birds of the heavens.

22 Destruction and Death say,

We have heard a rumor thereof with our ears.

23 God understandeth the way thereof,

And he knoweth the place thereof.

24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth,

And seeth under the whole heaven;

25 To make a weight for the wind:

Yea, he meteth out the waters by measure.

26 When he made a decree for the rain,

And a way for the lightning of the thunder;

27 Then did he see it, and declare it;

He established it, yea, and searched it out.

28 And unto man he said,

Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;

And to depart from evil is understanding.

Job 28:20–28 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? 21 For it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the fowl of the heavens. 22 Destruction and death say, We have heard its report with our ears. 23 God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth its place: 24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, he seeth under the whole heaven. 25 In making a weight for the wind, and meting out the waters by measure, 26 In appointing a statute for the rain, and a way for the thunder’s flash: 27 Then did he see it, and declare it; he established it, yea, and searched it out; 28 And unto man he said, Lo, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Job 28:20–28 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

20 “Where does wisdom come from?

Where does understanding live?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living being,

hidden even from the birds in the air.

22 Decay and Death say,

‘We’ve heard a rumor about it.’

23 “God understands the way to it.

He knows where it lives

24 because he can see to the ends of the earth

and observe everything under heaven.

25 When he gave the wind its force

and measured the water ⸤in the sea⸥,

26 when he made rules for the rain

and set paths for the thunderstorms,

27 then he saw it and announced it.

He confirmed it and examined it.

28 So he told humans,

‘The fear of the Lord is wisdom!

To stay away from evil is understanding.’ ”

Job 28:20–28 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

20 Where then does wisdom come from,

and where is understanding located?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing

and concealed from the birds of the sky.

22 Abaddon and Death say,

“We have heard news of it with our ears.”

23 But God understands the way to wisdom,

and He knows its location.

24 For He looks to the ends of the earth

and sees everything under the heavens.

25 When God fixed the weight of the wind

and limited the water by measure,

26 when He established a limit for the rain

and a path for the lightning,

27 He considered wisdom and evaluated it;

He established it and examined it.

28 He said to mankind,

“The fear of the Lord is this: wisdom.

And to turn from evil is understanding.”

Job 28:20–28 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

20 “Where then does wisdom come from?

And where is the place of understanding?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of all living,

and concealed from the birds of the air.

22 Abaddon and Death say,

‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’

23 “God understands the way to it,

and he knows its place.

24 For he looks to the ends of the earth,

and sees everything under the heavens.

25 When he gave to the wind its weight,

and apportioned out the waters by measure;

26 when he made a decree for the rain,

and a way for the thunderbolt;

27 then he saw it and declared it;

he established it, and searched it out.

28 And he said to humankind,

‘Truly, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;

and to depart from evil is understanding.’ ”

Job 28:20–28 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

20 Indeed, from where does wisdom come?

And where in the world is the place of understanding?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of all living,

and it is concealed from the birds of the heaven.

22 Abaddon and Death say,

‘We heard its rumor with our ears.’

23 “God understands its way,

and he knows its place,

24 for he himself looks to the end of the earth;

he sees under all the heaven.

25 When he gave weight to the wind

and he apportioned the waters by measure,

26 when he made a rule for the rain

and a way for the thunder’s lightning bolt,

27 then he saw it and talked about it;

he established it, and moreover, he explored it.

28 And to the human beings he said,

‘Look, the fear of the Lord is wisdom,

and to depart from evil is understanding.’ ”

Job 28:20–28 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

20 “So where does wisdom come from?

Where does understanding live?

21 It’s hidden from the eyes of every living thing.

Even the birds of the air can’t find it.

22 Death and the Grave say,

‘Only reports about it have reached our ears.’

23 But God understands the way to it.

He’s the only one who knows where it lives.

24 He sees from one end of the earth to the other.

He views everything in the world.

25 He made the mighty wind.

He measured out the waters.

26 He gave orders for the rain to fall.

He made paths for the thunderstorms.

27 Then he looked at wisdom and set its price.

He established it and put it to the test.

28 He said to human beings,

‘Have respect for me. That will prove you are wise.

Avoid evil. That will show you have understanding.’ ”

Job 28:20–28 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

20 Where then does wisdom come from?

And where is the place of understanding?

21 “Thus it is hidden from the eyes of all living

And concealed from the birds of the sky.

22 Abaddon and Death say,

‘With our ears we have heard a report of it.’

23 God understands its way,

And He knows its place.

24 “For He looks to the ends of the earth

And sees everything under the heavens.

25 “When He imparted weight to the wind

And meted out the waters by measure,

26 When He set a limit for the rain

And a course for the thunderbolt,

27 Then He saw it and declared it;

He established it and also searched it out.

28 “And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;

And to depart from evil is understanding.’ ”
