Hebrews 4–10

4 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you ashould seem bto come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as cunto them: but the word preached did not profit them, ||dnot being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as ehe said, fAs I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished gfrom the foundation of the world. For ehe spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, hAnd God did rest the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again, fIf they shall enter into my rest. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and cthey to whom ||it was first preached ientered not in because of unbelief: Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying kin David, lTo day, after so long a time; as it is said, lTo day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. For if ||Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a ||rest to the people of God. 10 For mhe that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall nafter the same oexample of ||punbelief. 12 For qthe word of God is rquick, and powerful, and ssharper than any ttwoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of usoul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is va discerner of the thoughts and wintents of the heart. 13 xNeither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are ynaked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

14 Seeing then that we have a great zhigh priest, athat is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, blet us hold fast our cprofession. 15 For dwe have not zan high priest ewhich cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was fin all points gtempted like as we are, yet hwithout sin. 16 iLet us therefore come jboldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and kfind grace to help in time of need.

5 aFor every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men bin things pertaining to God, athat he may offer both cgifts and sacrifices dfor sins: eWho ||can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is fcompassed with infirmity. And by reason hereof he ought, gas for the people, so also for himself, to offer dfor sins. And hno man itaketh this honour unto himself, but khe that is called of God, las was Aaron. So also Christ mglorified not himself to be made nan high priest; but he that said unto him, oThou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another place, pThou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Who in the days of his flesh, qwhen he had offered up rprayers and supplications swith strong crying and ttears unto him that was able uto save him from death, and vwas heard ||in that he wfeared; Though he were xa Son, yet ylearned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And zbeing made perfect, he became athe author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; 10 Called of God ban high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

11 Of whom cwe have many things to say, and dhard to be uttered, seeing ye are edull of hearing. 12 For when ffor the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be gthe first hprinciples of ithe oracles of God; and care become such as have need of jmilk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth jmilk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is ka babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are ||of full age, even those who by reason ||of use have their senses lexercised mto ndiscern both good and evil.

6 Therefore aleaving ||the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto cperfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance dfrom dead works, and of faith toward God, eOf the doctrine of baptisms, and fof laying on of hands, and gof resurrection of the dead, and ghof ieternal judgment. And this will we do, kif God permit. For lit is mimpossible for those who were once nenlightened, and have tasted of othe heavenly gift, and pwere made partakers of sthe Holy Ghost, And qhave tasted rthe good word of God, and sthe powers of tthe world to come, If they shall ttfall away, to renew them again uunto repentance; vseeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and wput him to an open shame. For the earth xwhich drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs ymeet zfor them ||by whom it is dressed, xreceiveth blessing from God: But athat which beareth thorns and briers is brejected, and is bbnigh unto ccursing; ccwhose end is to be burned.

But, beloved, we are persuaded dbetter things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. 10 ddFor eGod is not unrighteous fto forget your work and fglabour of love, which hye have shewed toward his name, in that iye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. 11 And we desire that every one of you do hshew the same kdiligence to lthe full assurance of mhope unto the end: 12 That ye be not nslothful, but nnfollowers of them who through faith and patience inherit opthe promises. 13 For owhen God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, qhe sware by himself, 14 Saying, rSurely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. 15 And so, pafter he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. 16 For men verily swear by the greater: and san oath for tconfirmation is to them an end of all ustrife. 17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto vthe heirs of xpromise wthe immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by xan oath: 18 That by xtwo wimmutable things, in which it was yimpossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon mthe hope zset before us: 19 Which hope we have as aan anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and bwhich entereth into that within cthe veil; 20 Whither dthe forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made ean high priest ffor ever after the order of Melchisedec.

7 For this aMelchisedec, king of bSalem, priest of cthe most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; aTo whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of bSalem, which is, King of dpeace; Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto ethe Son of God; abideth a priest fcontinually. Now consider how great this man was, aunto whom even gthe patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. And verily hthey that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though ithey come out of the loins of Abraham: But he whose ||descent is not counted from them areceived tithes of Abraham, and ablessed jhim that had the promises. And without all kcontradiction the less is blessed of the better. And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom lit is witnessed that mhe liveth. And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. 10 For ihe was yet in the loins of his father, awhen Melchisedec met him. 11 nIf therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people oreceived the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise pafter the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? 12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. 13 For qhe of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar. 14 For it is evident that qrour Lord ssprang out of tJuda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. 15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, 16 Who is made, not after the law of tta carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. 17 For uhe testifieth, vThou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. 18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before nfor wthe weakness and unprofitableness thereof. 19 For nxthe law made nothing perfect, ||but the bringing in of ya better zhope did; by the which awe draw nigh unto God. 20 And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest: 21 (For those priests were made ||without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, vThe Lord sware and will not brepent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) 22 By so much was Jesus made ca surety of da ybetter etestament. 23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: 24 But this man, because he continueth fever, hath ||an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Wherefore he is able also to save them ||gto the uttermost ahthat come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth ito make intercession for them.

26 For such jan high priest became us, who is kholy, lharmless, undefiled, mseparate from sinners, and made nhigher than the heavens; 27 Who needeth not nndaily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, ofirst for his own sins, and othen for the people’s: for pthis he did qonce, when he offered up himself. 28 For the law maketh men high priests rwhich have infirmity; but the word of sthe oath, which was since the law, maketh tthe Son, who is uconsecrated for evermore.

8 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such aan high priest, bwho is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty cin the heavens;
