Hebrews 1–13

1 *God, who at sundry times and ain divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath bin these last days cspoken unto us by dhis Son, whom he hath eappointed fheir of all things, gby whom also he made hthe worlds; Who being ithe brightness jof his glory, and kthe express image of his person, and lupholding all things by the word of his power, mwhen he had by himself purged our sins, nsat down oon the right hand of the Majesty on high; Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained pa more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, qThou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, rI will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And ||sagain, twhen he bringeth in uthe firstbegotten into vthe world, he saith, wAnd let all the angels of God worship him. And xof the angels he saith, yWho maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. But unto dthe Son he saith, zThy throne, O God, is afor ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, bhath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. 10 And, cThou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: 11 dThey shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall ewax old as doth a garment; 12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art ethe same, and thy years shall not fail. 13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, fSit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? 14 Are they not all gministering spirits, hsent forth to minister for them who shall be iheirs of salvation?

2 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word aspoken by angels was stedfast, and bevery transgression and disobedience received a just crecompence of reward; dHow shall we escape, if we neglect so great esalvation; which fat the first began to be spoken by gthe Lord, and was gconfirmed unto us hby them that heard him; God also bearing them witness, both with gisigns and iwonders, and with divers klmiracles, and ||kgifts of the Holy Ghost, maccording to his own will?

For nunto the angels hath he not put in subjection othe world to come, whereof we speak. But pone in a certain place qtestified, saying, rWhat is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest him ||a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: sThou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But tnow we see not yet all things put under him. But we see Jesus, uvwho was made a little lower than the angels ||vwfor the suffering of death, ucrowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should xtaste death yfor every man. 10 zFor it became him, afor whom are all things, and bby whom are all things, in bringing cmany sons unto glory, to make dthe captain of their salvation eperfect through sufferings. 11 For both fhe that sanctifieth and gthey who are sanctified hare all of one: for which cause ihe is not ashamed to call them jbrethren, 12 Saying, kI will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of lthe church will I sing praise unto thee. 13 And again, mI will put my trust in him. And again, nBehold I and the children owhich God hath given me. 14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of pflesh and blood, qhe also himself likewise took part of the same; that rthrough death he might sdestroy him that had the power of death, tthat is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who uthrough vfear of death were all their lifetime wsubject to vbondage. 16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. 17 Wherefore xxin all things it behoved him qto be made like unto his brethren, that he might be ya merciful and faithful high priest zin things pertaining to God, to amake reconciliation for the sins of the people. 18 yFor in that he himself hath suffered bbeing tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

3 Wherefore, aholy brethren, partakers of bthe heavenly ccalling, consider dthe Apostle and eHigh Priest of our fprofession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also gMoses was faithful in all his house. For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as hhe who hath ibuilded the house hath more honour than the house. For every house is ibuilded by some man; but jhe that ibuilt all things is God. And gMoses verily was kfaithful in all his house, as la servant, mfor a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; But Christ as na son over his own house; owhose house are we, if we phold fast qthe confidence and rthe rejoicing sof the hope firm tunto the end. Wherefore (as uthe Holy Ghost saith, vTo day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works wforty years. 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. 11 xSo I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)

12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from ythe living God. 13 But zexhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened athrough the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we bhold the beginning of our cconfidence bstedfast unto the end; 15 While it is said, dTo day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. 16 For esome, when they had heard, did fprovoke: howbeit gnot all that came out of Egypt by Moses. 17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, hwhose icarcases fell in the wilderness? 18 And kto whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that lbelieved not? 19 So we see that mthey could not enter in because of nunbelief.

4 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you ashould seem bto come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as cunto them: but the word preached did not profit them, ||dnot being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as ehe said, fAs I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished gfrom the foundation of the world. For ehe spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, hAnd God did rest the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again, fIf they shall enter into my rest. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and cthey to whom ||it was first preached ientered not in because of unbelief: Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying kin David, lTo day, after so long a time; as it is said, lTo day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. For if ||Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a ||rest to the people of God. 10 For mhe that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall nafter the same oexample of ||punbelief. 12 For qthe word of God is rquick, and powerful, and ssharper than any ttwoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of usoul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is va discerner of the thoughts and wintents of the heart. 13 xNeither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are ynaked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

14 Seeing then that we have a great zhigh priest, athat is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, blet us hold fast our cprofession. 15 For dwe have not zan high priest ewhich cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was fin all points gtempted like as we are, yet hwithout sin. 16 iLet us therefore come jboldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and kfind grace to help in time of need.

5 aFor every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men bin things pertaining to God, athat he may offer both cgifts and sacrifices dfor sins: eWho ||can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is fcompassed with infirmity. And by reason hereof he ought, gas for the people, so also for himself, to offer dfor sins. And hno man itaketh this honour unto himself, but khe that is called of God, las was Aaron. So also Christ mglorified not himself to be made nan high priest; but he that said unto him, oThou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another place, pThou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Who in the days of his flesh, qwhen he had offered up rprayers and supplications swith strong crying and ttears unto him that was able uto save him from death, and vwas heard ||in that he wfeared; Though he were xa Son, yet ylearned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And zbeing made perfect, he became athe author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; 10 Called of God ban high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

11 Of whom cwe have many things to say, and dhard to be uttered, seeing ye are edull of hearing. 12 For when ffor the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be gthe first hprinciples of ithe oracles of God; and care become such as have …
