Genesis 9:5–7

And surely your blood of your lives will I require; eat the hand of every beast will I require it, and fat the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man. gWhoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: hfor in the image of God made he man. And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

Genesis 9:5–7 — The New International Version (NIV)

And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.

“Whoever sheds human blood,

by humans shall their blood be shed;

for in the image of God

has God made mankind.

As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”

Genesis 9:5–7 — English Standard Version (ESV)

And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.

“Whoever sheds the blood of man,

by man shall his blood be shed,

for God made man in his own image.

And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.”

Genesis 9:5–7 — New Living Translation (NLT)

“And I will require the blood of anyone who takes another person’s life. If a wild animal kills a person, it must die. And anyone who murders a fellow human must die. If anyone takes a human life, that person’s life will also be taken by human hands. For God made human beings in his own image. Now be fruitful and multiply, and repopulate the earth.”

Genesis 9:5–7 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man.

“Whoever sheds man’s blood,

By man his blood shall be shed;

For in the image of God

He made man.

And as for you, be fruitful and multiply;

Bring forth abundantly in the earth

And multiply in it.”

Genesis 9:5–7 — New Century Version (NCV)

I will demand blood for life. I will demand the life of any animal that kills a person, and I will demand the life of anyone who takes another person’s life.

“Whoever kills a human being

will be killed by a human being,

because God made humans

in his own image.

“As for you, Noah, I want you and your family to have many children, to grow in number on the earth, and to become many.”

Genesis 9:5–7 — American Standard Version (ASV)

And surely your blood, the blood of your lives, will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it: and at the hand of man, even at the hand of every man’s brother, will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man. And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

Genesis 9:5–7 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

And indeed your blood, the blood of your lives, will I require: at the hand of every animal will I require it, and at the hand of Man, at the hand of each the blood of his brother, will I require the life of Man. Whoso sheddeth Man’s blood, by Man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God he hath made Man. And ye, be fruitful and multiply: swarm on the earth, and multiply on it.

Genesis 9:5–7 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

In addition, I will demand your blood for your life. I will demand it from any animal or from any person. I will demand the life of any person ⸤who kills⸥ another person.

Whoever sheds human blood,

by humans his blood will be shed,

because in the image of God, God made humans.

Be fertile, and increase in number. Spread over the earth, and increase.”

Genesis 9:5–7 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

I will require the life of every animal and every man for your life and your blood. I will require the life of each man’s brother for a man’s life.

Whoever sheds man’s blood,

his blood will be shed by man,

for God made man in His image.

But you, be fruitful and multiply; spread out over the earth and multiply on it.”

Genesis 9:5–7 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

For your own lifeblood I will surely require a reckoning: from every animal I will require it and from human beings, each one for the blood of another, I will require a reckoning for human life.

Whoever sheds the blood of a human,

by a human shall that person’s blood be shed;

for in his own image

God made humankind.

And you, be fruitful and multiply, abound on the earth and multiply in it.”

Genesis 9:5–7 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

And your lifeblood I will require; from every animal I will require it. And from the hand of humankind, from the hand of each man to his brother I will require the life of humankind.

As for the one shedding the blood of humankind,

by humankind his blood shall be shed,

for God made humankind in his own image.

“And you, be fruitful and multiply, swarm on the earth and multiply in it.”

Genesis 9:5–7 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

You can be sure that I will hold someone accountable if you are murdered. I will even hold animals accountable if they kill you. I will also hold anyone accountable who murders another person.

“Anyone who murders man

will be killed by man.

That is because I have made man

in my own likeness.

“Have children and increase your numbers. Multiply on the earth and increase your numbers on it.”

Genesis 9:5–7 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

Surely I will require your lifeblood; from every beast I will require it. And from every man, from every man’s brother I will require the life of man.

“Whoever sheds man’s blood,

By man his blood shall be shed,

For in the image of God

He made man.

“As for you, be fruitful and multiply;

Populate the earth abundantly and multiply in it.”
