Ezekiel 29:6–11 — The New International Version (NIV)

Then all who live in Egypt will know that I am the Lord.

“ ‘You have been a staff of reed for the people of Israel. When they grasped you with their hands, you splintered and you tore open their shoulders; when they leaned on you, you broke and their backs were wrenched.

“ ‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will bring a sword against you and kill both man and beast. Egypt will become a desolate wasteland. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

“ ‘Because you said, “The Nile is mine; I made it,” 10 therefore I am against you and against your streams, and I will make the land of Egypt a ruin and a desolate waste from Migdol to Aswan, as far as the border of Cush. 11 The foot of neither man nor beast will pass through it; no one will live there for forty years.

Ezekiel 29:6–11 — English Standard Version (ESV)

Then all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the Lord.

“Because you have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel, when they grasped you with the hand, you broke and tore all their shoulders; and when they leaned on you, you broke and made all their loins to shake. Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will bring a sword upon you, and will cut off from you man and beast, and the land of Egypt shall be a desolation and a waste. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

“Because you said, ‘The Nile is mine, and I made it,’ 10 therefore, behold, I am against you and against your streams, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Cush. 11 No foot of man shall pass through it, and no foot of beast shall pass through it; it shall be uninhabited forty years.

Ezekiel 29:6–11 — New Living Translation (NLT)

All the people of Egypt will know that I am the Lord,

for to Israel you were just a staff made of reeds.

When Israel leaned on you,

you splintered and broke

and stabbed her in the armpit.

When she put her weight on you,

you collapsed, and her legs gave way.

“Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will bring an army against you, O Egypt, and destroy both people and animals. The land of Egypt will become a desolate wasteland, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.

“Because you said, ‘The Nile River is mine; I made it,’ 10 I am now the enemy of both you and your river. I will make the land of Egypt a totally desolate wasteland, from Migdol to Aswan, as far south as the border of Ethiopia. 11 For forty years not a soul will pass that way, neither people nor animals. It will be completely uninhabited.

Ezekiel 29:6–11 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

“Then all the inhabitants of Egypt

Shall know that I am the Lord,

Because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel.

When they took hold of you with the hand,

You broke and tore all their shoulders;

When they leaned on you,

You broke and made all their backs quiver.”

‘Therefore thus says the Lord God: “Surely I will bring a sword upon you and cut off from you man and beast. And the land of Egypt shall become desolate and waste; then they will know that I am the Lord, because he said, ‘The River is mine, and I have made it.’ 10 Indeed, therefore, I am against you and against your rivers, and I will make the land of Egypt utterly waste and desolate, from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Ethiopia. 11 Neither foot of man shall pass through it nor foot of beast pass through it, and it shall be uninhabited forty years.

Ezekiel 29:6–11 — New Century Version (NCV)

Then all the people who live in Egypt will know that I am the Lord.

“ ‘Israel tried to lean on you for help, but you were like a crutch made out of a weak stalk of grass. When their hands grabbed you, you splintered and tore open their shoulders. When they leaned on you, you broke and made all their backs twist.

“ ‘So this is what the Lord God says: I will cause an enemy to attack you and kill your people and animals. Egypt will become an empty desert. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

“ ‘Because you said, “The Nile River is mine, and I have made it,” 10 I am against you and your rivers. I will destroy the land of Egypt and make it an empty desert from Migdol in the north to Aswan in the south, all the way to the border of Cush. 11 No person or animal will walk through it, and no one will live in Egypt for forty years.

Ezekiel 29:6–11 — American Standard Version (ASV)

And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am Jehovah, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel. When they took hold of thee by thy hand, thou didst break, and didst rend all their shoulders; and when they leaned upon thee, thou brakest, and madest all their loins to be at a stand.

Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will bring a sword upon thee, and will cut off from thee man and beast. And the land of Egypt shall be a desolation and a waste; and they shall know that I am Jehovah. Because he hath said, The river is mine, and I have made it; 10 therefore, behold, I am against thee, and against thy rivers, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from the tower of Seveneh even unto the border of Ethiopia. 11 No foot of man shall pass through it, nor foot of beast shall pass through it, neither shall it be inhabited forty years.

Ezekiel 29:6–11 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am Jehovah, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel. When they took hold of thee by thy hand, thou didst give way and rend all their shoulder; and when they leaned upon thee, thou didst break, and didst make all their loins to tremble.

Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I will bring a sword upon thee, and cut off man and beast from thee. And the land of Egypt shall be a desolation and a waste: and they shall know that I am Jehovah, because he saith, The river is mine, and I made it. 10 Therefore behold, I am against thee, and against thy rivers, and I will make the land of Egypt deserts of wasteness and desolation, from Migdol to Syene, even unto the border of Ethiopia. 11 No foot of man shall pass through it, nor shall foot of beast pass through it, nor shall it be inhabited, forty years.

Ezekiel 29:6–11 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

Then all those living in Egypt will know that I am the Lord

Egypt, you have become like a ⸤broken⸥ walking stick

to the nation of Israel.

When Israel grabbed you, you splintered and tore up their shoulders.

When they leaned on you, you broke, and they wrenched their backs.

“ ‘This is what the Almighty Lord says: I am going to attack you with a sword. I will kill people and animals. Egypt will become a wasteland and a pile of rubble. Then you will know that I am the Lord. You said, “The Nile River is mine. I made it.” 10 That is why I’m against you and the Nile River. I will turn Egypt into a pile of rubble. It will become a wasteland, from Migdol to Syene, all the way to the border of Sudan. 11 No human or animal will walk through it, and no one will live there for 40 years.

Ezekiel 29:6–11 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Then all the inhabitants of Egypt

will know that I am Yahweh,

for they have been a staff made of reed

to the house of Israel.

When Israel grasped you by the hand,

you splintered, tearing all their shoulders;

when they leaned on you,

you shattered and made all their hips unsteady.

“Therefore this is what the Lord God says: I am going to bring a sword against you and wipe out man and animal from you. The land of Egypt will be a desolate ruin. Then they will know that I am Yahweh. Because you said, ‘The Nile is my own; I made it,’ 10 therefore, I am against you and your Nile. I will turn the land of Egypt into ruins, a desolate waste from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Cush. 11 No human foot will pass through it, and no animal foot will pass through it. It will be uninhabited for 40 years.

Ezekiel 29:6–11 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Then all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know

that I am the Lord

because you were a staff of reed

to the house of Israel;

when they grasped you with the hand, you broke,

and tore all their shoulders;

and when they leaned on you, you broke,

and made all their legs unsteady.

Therefore, thus says the Lord God: I will bring a sword upon you, and will cut off from you human being and animal; and the land of Egypt shall be a desolation and a waste. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.

Because you said, “The Nile is mine, and I made it,” 10 therefore, I am against you, and against your channels, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Ethiopia. 11 No human foot shall pass through it, and no animal foot shall pass through it; it shall be uninhabited forty years.

Ezekiel 29:6–11 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

And all of the inhabitants of Egypt will know that I am Yahweh,

because of their being a staff of reed for the house of Israel.

When they took hold of you with the hand, you snapped,

and you split their every shoulder.

And when they leaned on you, you broke,

and you caused all of their loins to wobble.”

Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Look! I am bringing on you a sword, and I will cut off from you human and animal. And the land of Egypt will become a desolation and ruins, and they will know that I am Yahweh because he said, ‘The Nile is mine! And I, I made it!’ 10 Therefore look! I am against you and against your Nile streams, and I will make the land of Egypt into ruins, a pile of rubble, a desolation from Migdol to Syene and up to the boundary of Cush. 11 A foot of a human will not pass over it, and a foot of an animal will not pass over it, and so it will not be inhabited for forty years.

Ezekiel 29:6–11 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

Then everyone who lives in Egypt will know that I am the Lord.

“ ‘ “You have been like a walking stick made out of a papyrus stem. The people of Israel tried to lean on you. They took hold of you. But you broke under their weight. You tore their shoulders open. They leaned on you. But you snapped in two. And their backs were broken.” ’ ”

So the Lord and King says, “I will send Nebuchadnezzar’s sword against you. He will kill your people and their animals. Egypt will become a dry and empty desert. Then your people will know that I am the Lord.

“You said, ‘The Nile River belongs to me. I made it for myself.’ 10 So I am against you and your streams. I will destroy the land of Egypt. I will turn it into a dry and empty desert from Migdol all the way to Aswan. I will destroy everything as far as the border of Cush.

11 “No people or animals will travel through Egypt. No one will even live there for 40 years.

Ezekiel 29:6–11 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

“Then all the inhabitants of Egypt will know that I am the Lord,

Because they have been only a staff made of reed to the house of Israel.

“When they took hold of you with the hand,

You broke and tore all their hands;

And when they leaned on you,

You broke and made all their loins quake.”

Therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I will bring upon you a sword and I will cut off from you man and beast.

“The land of Egypt will become a desolation and waste. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

Because you said, ‘The Nile is mine, and I have made it,

10 therefore, behold, I am against you and against your rivers, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Syene and even to the border of Ethiopia.

11 “A man’s foot will not pass through it, and the foot of a beast will not pass through it, and it will not be inhabited for forty years.
