44 Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this oproverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter. 45 Thou art thy mother’s daughter, that plotheth her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of qthy sisters, which plothed their husbands and their children: ryour mother was an Hittite, and ryour father an Amorite. 46 And thine elder sister is sSamaria, she and her daughters that dwell tuat thy left hand: and thy younger sister, that dwelleth tvat thy right hand, is wSodom and her daughters. 47 xYet hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but, ||as if that were a very little thing, zthou wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways. 48 aAs I live, saith the Lord God, bSodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters. 49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, cpride, dfulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50 And cthey were haughty, and ecommitted abomination before me: therefore fI took them away gas I saw good. 51 Neither hath hSamaria committed half of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they, and ihast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done. 52 jThou also, which hast kjudged thy sisters, lbear thine own shame for thy sins hthat thou hast committed more abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou: yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, iin that thou hast justified thy sisters.

53 When mI shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them: 54 That thou mayest lbear thine own shame, and nmayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that nnthou art a comfort unto them. 55 When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to nnntheir former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate. 56 For thy sister Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in the day of thy pride, 57 Before thy wickedness was discovered, pas at the time of thy reproach of the daughters of Syria, and all that are round about her, qthe daughters of the Philistines, which ||despise thee round about. 58 rThou hast borne thy lewdness and thine abominations, saith the Lord. 59 For thus saith the Lord God; I will even deal with thee as thou hast done, which hast sdespised tthe oath sin breaking tthe covenant. 60 Nevertheless uI will remember my covenant with thee vin the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee wan everlasting covenant. 61 Then xthou shalt remember thy ways, and nbe ashamed, when thou shalt receive ythy sisters, ythine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee zfor daughters, but anot by thy covenant. 62 And bI will establish my covenant with thee; cand thou shalt know that I am the Lord: 63 dThat thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and enever fopen thy mouth any more dbecause of thy shame, when I am gpacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord God.

17 *And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, aput forth a riddle, and bspeak a parable unto the house of Israel; And say, Thus saith the Lord God; cA great eagle dwith great wings, dlongwinged, full of dfeathers, which had divers colours, ecame unto Lebanon, and ftook gthe highest branch of the cedar: fHe cropped off the top of his young twigs, and carried it into a land of htraffick; he set it in a city of merchants. iHe took also of the seed of the land, and planted it jin a fruitful field; he placed it kby great waters, and set it kas a willow tree. And it grew, and became kka spreading vine lof low stature, mwhose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth nbranches, and shot forth osprigs. There was also panother great eagle dwith great wings and many dfeathers: and, behold, pthis vine mdid bend her roots toward him, and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by qthe furrows of her plantation. It was planted in a good soil by great waters, qqthat it might bring forth branches, and qqthat it might bear fruit, qqthat it might be a goodly vine. Say thou, Thus saith the Lord God; Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither? it shall wither in all the leaves of her spring, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots thereof. 10 Yea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? rshall it not utterly wither, when sthe east wind toucheth it? it shall wither in qthe furrows where it grew.

11 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, 12 Say now to tthe rebellious house, ttKnow ye not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, uthe king of Babylon is come to Jerusalem, and hath taken the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and led them with him to Babylon; 13 And vhath taken of the king’s seed, and made a covenant with him, wand hath taken an oath of him: uhe hath also taken xthe mighty of the land: 14 That the kingdom might be ybase, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping of his covenant it might stand. 15 But zhe rebelled against him ain sending his ambassadors abinto Egypt, cthat they might give him horses and much people. dShall he prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? or eshall he break the covenant, and be delivered? 16 fAs I live, saith the Lord God, surely gin the place where the king dwelleth vthat made him king, ewhose oath he despised, and ewhose covenant he brake, even with him hin the midst of Babylon he shall die. 17 bNeither shall iPharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, kby casting up mounts, and kbuilding forts, to cut off many persons: 18 Seeing ehe despised the oath eby breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had lgiven his hand, and hath done all these things, ehe shall not escape. 19 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; fAs I live, surely emmine oath that he hath despised, and emy covenant that he hath broken, even it will I recompense upon his own head. 20 And nI will spread my net upon him, and nhe shall be taken in my snare, and hI will bring him to Babylon, and owill plead with him there for phis trespass that he hath trespassed against me. 21 And all his fugitives with all qhis bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered qtoward all winds: and ye shall know that rI the Lord have spoken it.

22 Thus saith the Lord God; I will also stake of the highest branch of the high cedar, and will set it; I will tcrop off from the top of his young twigs ua tender one, and will plant it vupon an high mountain and eminent: 23 wIn the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it: and xit shall bring forth boughs, and xbear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and yunder it shall dwell zall fowl of every wing; in the shadow of zzthe branches thereof shall they dwell. 24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I the Lord ahave brought down the high tree, ahave exalted the low tree, have dried up bthe green tree, and have made bcthe dry tree to flourish: dI the Lord have spoken and have done it.

18 The word of the Lord came unto me again, saying, What mean ye, that aye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, bThe fathers have eaten sour grapes, band the children’s teeth are set on edge? cAs I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use athis proverb in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: dthe soul that sinneth, it shall die.

But if a man be just, and do ethat which is lawful and right, And hath not featen upon the mountains, neither ghath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hhath defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither ihath come near to ka menstruous woman, And hath not loppressed any, but mhath restored to the debtor his pledge, nhath spoiled none by violence, ohath given his bread to the hungry, and ophath covered the naked with a garment; qHe that hath not given forth upon rusury, neither qhath taken any sincrease, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, thath executed true judgment between man and man, uHath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, vhe shall surely live, saith the Lord God.

10 If he beget a son that is a ||robber, wa shedder of blood, and ||that doeth the like to any one of these things, 11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even fhath eaten upon the mountains, and hdefiled his neighbour’s wife, 12 lxHath oppressed the poor and needy, nxhath spoiled by violence, hath not mrestored the pledge, and ghath lifted up his eyes to the idols, xxhath committed abomination, 13 qHath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; yhis blood shall be upon him.

14 Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and yyconsidereth, and doeth not such like, 15 That fhath not eaten upon the mountains, neither ghath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hhath not defiled his neighbour’s wife, 16 Neither lhath oppressed any, mhath not withholden the pledge, neither nhath spoiled by violence, but ohath given his bread to the hungry, and ohath covered the naked with a garment, 17 That zhath taken off his hand from the poor, qthat hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, uhath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, vhe shall surely live. 18 As for his father, because ahe cruelly oppressed, anspoiled his
