Isaiah 48:6–11

6 You have heard these things; look at them all.

Will you not admit them?

“From now on I will tell you of new things,

of hidden things unknown to you.

7 They are created now, and not long ago;

you have not heard of them before today.

So you cannot say,

‘Yes, I knew of them.’

8 You have neither heard nor understood;

from of old your ears have not been open.

Well do I know how treacherous you are;

you were called a rebel from birth.

9 For my own name’s sake I delay my wrath;

for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you,

so as not to destroy you completely.

10 See, I have refined you, though not as silver;

I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.

11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do this.

How can I let myself be defamed?

I will not yield my glory to another.

6 “You have heard; now see all this;

and will you not declare it?

From this time forth I announce to you new things,

hidden things that you have not known.

7 They are created now, not long ago;

before today you have never heard of them,

lest you should say, ‘Behold, I knew them.’

8 You have never heard, you have never known,

from of old your ear has not been opened.

For I knew that you would surely deal treacherously,

and that from before birth you were called a rebel.

9 “For my name’s sake I defer my anger;

for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you,

that I may not cut you off.

10 Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver;

I have tried you in the furnace of affliction.

11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it,

for how should my name be profaned?

My glory I will not give to another.

6 Thou hast heard, see all this;

And will not ye declare it?

I have shewed thee new things from this time,

Even hidden things, and thou didst not know them.

7 They are created now, and not from the beginning;

Even before the day when thou heardest them not;

Lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them.

8 Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not;

Yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened:

For I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously,

And wast called a transgressor from the womb.

9 For my name’s sake will I defer mine anger,

And for my praise will I refrain for thee,

That I cut thee not off.

10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver;

I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

11 For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it:

For how should my name be polluted?

And I will not give my glory unto another.

6 You have heard my predictions and seen them fulfilled,

but you refuse to admit it.

Now I will tell you new things,

secrets you have not yet heard.

7 They are brand new, not things from the past.

So you cannot say, ‘We knew that all the time!’

8 “Yes, I will tell you of things that are entirely new,

things you never heard of before.

For I know so well what traitors you are.

You have been rebels from birth.

9 Yet for my own sake and for the honor of my name,

I will hold back my anger and not wipe you out.

10 I have refined you, but not as silver is refined.

Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering.

11 I will rescue you for my sake—

yes, for my own sake!

I will not let my reputation be tarnished,

and I will not share my glory with idols!

6 “You have heard;

See all this.

And will you not declare it?

I have made you hear new things from this time,

Even hidden things, and you did not know them.

7 They are created now and not from the beginning;

And before this day you have not heard them,

Lest you should say, ‘Of course I knew them.’

8 Surely you did not hear,

Surely you did not know;

Surely from long ago your ear was not opened.

For I knew that you would deal very treacherously,

And were called a transgressor from the womb.

9 “For My name’s sake I will defer My anger,

And for My praise I will restrain it from you,

So that I do not cut you off.

10 Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver;

I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.

11 For My own sake, for My own sake, I will do it;

For how should My name be profaned?

And I will not give My glory to another.

6 “You heard and saw everything that happened,

so you should tell this news to others.

Now I will tell you about new things,

hidden things that you don’t know yet.

7 These things are happening now, not long ago;

you have not heard about them before today.

So you cannot say, ‘We already knew about that.’

8 But you have not heard me; you have not understood.

Even long ago you did not listen to me.

I knew you would surely turn against me;

you have fought against me since you were born.

9 But for my own sake I will be patient.

People will praise me for not becoming angry

and destroying you.

10 I have made you pure, but not by fire, as silver is made pure.

I have purified you by giving you troubles.

11 I do this for myself, for my own sake.

I will not let people speak evil against me,

and I will not let some god take my glory.

6 Thou hast heard it; behold all this; and ye, will ye not declare it? I have showed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, which thou hast not known. 7 They are created now, and not from of old; and before this day thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them. 8 Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from of old thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou didst deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb. 9 For my name’s sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off. 10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not as silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. 11 For mine own sake, for mine own sake, will I do it; for how should my name be profaned? and my glory will I not give to another.

6 Thou heardest, see all this; —and ye, will not ye declare it? I have caused thee to hear new things from this time, and things hidden, and that thou knewest not: 7 they are created now, and not long ago; and before this day thou hast not heard them, lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them. 8 Yea, thou heardest not, yea, thou knewest not, yea, from of old thine ear was not opened; for I knew that thou wouldest ever deal treacherously, and thou wast called a transgressor from the womb.

9 For my name’s sake I will defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain as to thee, that I cut thee not off. 10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not as silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. 11 For mine own sake, for mine own sake, will I do it; for how should my name be profaned? and I will not give my glory unto another.

6 You’ve heard these words. 

Now look at all this. 

Won’t you admit it? 

From now on I will reveal to you new things, 

hidden things that you do not know. 

7 They are created now, not in the past. 

You haven’t heard about them before today, 

so you can’t say that you already knew about them. 

8 You have never heard about them. 

You have never known about them. 

Your ears have never been open to hear them before. 

I know that you’ve acted very treacherously 

and that you have been called a rebel since you were born. 

9 For my name’s sake I’ll be patient. 

For my glory’s sake I’ll hold my anger back from you, 

rather than destroy you. 

10 I have refined you, 

but not like silver. 

I have tested you in the furnace of suffering. 

11 I am doing this for myself, only for myself. 

Why should my name be dishonored? 

I will not give my glory to anyone else. 

6 You have heard; now see all this;

and will you not declare it?

From this time forward I tell you new things,

hidden things that you have not known.

7 They are created now, not long ago;

before today you have never heard of them,

so that you could not say, “I already knew them.”

8 You have never heard; you have never known;

from of old your ear has not been opened.

For I knew that you would act very treacherously

and that from birth you were called a rebel.

9 For my name’s sake I defer my anger;

for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you,

so that I may not cut you off.

10 See, I have refined you but not like silver;

I have tested you in the furnace of adversity.

11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it,

for why should my name be profaned?

My glory I will not give to another.

6 You have heard; see it all.

And will you not declare it?

I announce new things to you from this time

and hidden things that you have not known.

7 Now they are created, and not from of old,

and before today, and you have not heard them

so that you could not say, “Look! I knew them.”

8 Neither have you heard, nor have you known,

nor from of old has your ear been opened.

For I knew you would deal treacherously, very treacherously,

and you are called a rebel from the womb.

9 For the sake of my name I refrain from my anger,

and for my praise I restrain it for you

so as not to cut you off.

10 Look! I have refined you, but not like silver;

I have chosen you in the furnace of misery.

11 For my own sake, for my own sake I do it;

for why should it be defiled?

And I will not give my glory to another.”

6 You have heard me tell you those things.

Think about all of them.

Won’t you admit they have taken place?

“From now on I will tell you about new things that will happen.

I have not made them known to you before.

7 Those things are taking place right now.

They did not happen long ago.

You have not heard of them before today.

So you can’t say,

‘Oh, yes. I already knew about them.’

8 You have not heard or understood what I said.

Your ears have been plugged up for a long time.

I knew very well that you would turn against me.

From the day you were born, you have refused to obey me.

9 For the honor of my own name I put off showing my anger.

I hold it back from you so people will continue to praise me.

I do not want to destroy you.

10 I have put you to the test in the furnace of suffering.

I have tried to make you pure.

But I did not use as much heat as it takes to make silver pure.

11 I tried to purify you for my own honor.

I did it for the honor of my name.

How can I let myself be dishonored?

I will not give up my glory to any other god.

6 “You have heard; look at all this.

And you, will you not declare it?

I proclaim to you new things from this time,

Even hidden things which you have not known.

7 “They are created now and not long ago;

And before today you have not heard them,

So that you will not say, ‘Behold, I knew them.’

8 “You have not heard, you have not known.

Even from long ago your ear has not been open,

Because I knew that you would deal very treacherously;

And you have been called a rebel from birth.

9 “For the sake of My name I delay My wrath,

And for My praise I restrain it for you,

In order not to cut you off.

10 “Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver;

I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.

11 “For My own sake, for My own sake, I will act;

For how can My name be profaned?

And My glory I will not give to another.
