Footnotes

  1. 38 Heb “[you who] forget God.” “Forgetting God” here means forgetting about his commandments and not respecting his moral authority.
  2. 39 Elsewhere in the psalms this verb is used (within a metaphorical framework) of a lion tearing its prey (see Pss 7:2; 17:12; 22:13).
  3. 40 The reference to a thank-offering recalls the earlier statement made in v. 14. Gratitude characterizes genuine worship.
  4. 41 Heb “and [to one who] sets a way I will show the deliverance of God.” Elsewhere the phrase “set a way” simply means “to travel” (see Gen 30:36; cf. ). The present translation assumes an emendation of וְשָׂם דֶּרֶךְ (vésam derekh) to וְשֹׁמֵר דְּרָכַּי (véshomer dérakhay, “and [the one who] keeps my ways” [i.e., commands, see Pss 18:21; 37:34). Another option is to read וְשֹׁמֵר דַּרְכּוֹ (véshomer darko, “and [the one who] guards his way,” i.e., “the one who is careful to follow a godly lifestyle”; see Ps 39:1).

“Mark this, then, you who forget God,

lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver!

The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me;

to one who orders his way rightly

I will show the salvation of God!”

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“Consider this, you who forget God,

or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:

Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,

and to the blameless I will show my salvation.”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

“Understand this, you who forget God,

or I will tear you apart,

and there will be no one to rescue you.

Whoever offers a thanksgiving sacrifice honors me,

and whoever orders his conduct,

I will show him the salvation of God.”

NLTNew Living Translation

Repent, all of you who forget me,

or I will tear you apart,

and no one will help you.

But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me.

If you keep to my path,

I will reveal to you the salvation of God.”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Now consider this, you who forget God,

lest I tear you apart, and there will be none to deliver.

He who sacrifices a thank offering honors me,

and he who orders his way;

I will show him the salvation of God.”

KJV 1900King James Version

Now consider this, ye that forget God,

Lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me:

And to him that ordereth his conversation aright

Will I shew the salvation of God.
