Footnotes

  1. 13 Heb “Refrain from anger! Abandon rage!”
  2. 14 Heb “for evil men.” The conjunction כִּי (ki, “for”) relates to the exhortations in v. 8; there is no reason to be frustrated, for the evildoers will be punished in due time.
  3. 15 Or “cut off, removed.”
  4. 16 Heb “and those who wait on the Lord, they will possess the land.”
  5. 17 Heb “and yet, a little, there will be no wicked [one].”
  6. 18 Heb “and you will carefully look upon his place, but he will not be [there].” The singular is used here in a representative sense; the typical evildoer is in view.
  7. 19 Heb “and they will take delight in (see v. 4) abundance of peace.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!

Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.

For the evildoers shall be cut off,

but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.

In just a little while, the wicked will be no more;

though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there.

But the meek shall inherit the land

and delight themselves in abundant peace.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;

do not fret—it leads only to evil.

For those who are evil will be destroyed,

but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.

A little while, and the wicked will be no more;

though you look for them, they will not be found.

But the meek will inherit the land

and enjoy peace and prosperity.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Refrain from anger and give up your rage;

do not be agitated—it can only bring harm.

For evildoers will be destroyed,

but those who put their hope in the Lord

will inherit the land.

A little while, and the wicked person will be no more;

though you look for him, he will not be there.

But the humble will inherit the land

and will enjoy abundant prosperity.

NLTNew Living Translation

Stop being angry!

Turn from your rage!

Do not lose your temper—

it only leads to harm.

For the wicked will be destroyed,

but those who trust in the Lord will possess the land.

Soon the wicked will disappear.

Though you look for them, they will be gone.

The lowly will possess the land

and will live in peace and prosperity.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Refrain from anger and forsake wrath.

Do not fret; it only brings evil.

For evildoers will be cut off,

but those who wait for Yahweh—

they will possess the land.

And yet a little while and the wicked will not be,

and you will look carefully upon his place, but he will not be.

But the afflicted will possess the land,

and they will take pleasure in an abundance of peace.

KJV 1900King James Version

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath:

Fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

For evildoers shall be cut off:

But those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.

For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be:

Yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

But the meek shall inherit the earth;

And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
