Signs of the End of the Age
24:3As7 he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, his disciples came to him privately and said, “Tell us, when will these things8 happen? And what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 24:4Jesus answered them,9 “Watch out10 that no one misleads you. 24:5For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’11 and they will mislead many. 24:6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. Make sure that you are not alarmed, for this must happen, but the end is still to come.12
Footnotes
- 7 Here δέ (de) has not been translated.
- 8 Because the phrase these things is plural, more than the temple’s destruction is in view. The question may presuppose that such a catastrophe signals the end.
- 9 Grk “answering, Jesus said to them.” This is somewhat redundant and has been simplified in the translation.
- 10 Or “Be on guard.”
- 11 Or “Messiah”; both “Christ” (Greek) and “Messiah” (Hebrew and Aramaic) mean “one who has been anointed.” See the note on Christ in .
- 12 Grk “it is not yet the end.”

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.

Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives. His disciples came to him privately and said, “Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will signal your return and the end of the world?”
Jesus told them, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.’ They will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately.
