Second Prediction of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection
9:30They went out from there and passed through Galilee. But39 Jesus40 did not want anyone to know, 9:31for he was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of men.41 They42 will kill him,43 and after three days he will rise.”449:32But they did not understand this statement and were afraid to ask him.
Questions About the Greatest
9:33Then45 they came to Capernaum.46 After Jesus47 was inside the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 9:34But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 9:35After he sat down, he called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 9:36He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 9:37“Whoever welcomes48 one of these little children49 in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”
Footnotes
- 39 Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.
- 40 Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
- 41 The plural Greek term ἀνθρώπων (anthrōpōn) is considered by some to be used here in a generic sense, referring to both men and women (cf. , “into human hands”; , “to people”). However, because this can be taken as a specific reference to the group responsible for Jesus’ arrest, where it is unlikely women were present (cf. Matt 26:47–56; Mark 14:43–52; Luke 22:47–53; John 18:2–12), the word “men” has been retained in the translation. There may also be a slight wordplay with “the Son of Man” earlier in the verse.
- 42 Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
- 43 Grk “They will kill him, and being killed, after …” The redundancy in the statement has been removed in the translation.
- 44 They will kill him and after three days he will rise. See the note at the end of regarding the passion predictions.
- 45 Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.
- 46 For location see ; ; .
- 47 Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
- 48 This verb, δέχομαι (dechomai), is a term of hospitality (L&N 34.53).
- 49 Children were very insignificant in ancient culture, so this child would be the perfect object lesson to counter the disciples’ selfish ambitions.

They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.” But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it.
They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.
Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”
He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

NLTNew Living Translation
Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn’t want anyone to know he was there, for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the dead.” They didn’t understand what he was saying, however, and they were afraid to ask him what he meant.
After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?” But they didn’t answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.”
Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.”
