Resistance to the Lord through Self-sufficiency
3:13“You have criticized me sharply,”23 says the Lord, “but you ask, ‘How have we criticized you?’ 3:14You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God. How have we been helped24 by keeping his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord who rules over all?253:15So now we consider the arrogant to be happy; indeed, those who practice evil are successful.26 In fact, those who challenge27 God escape!’ ”
3:16Then those who respected28 the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord took notice.29 A scroll30 was prepared before him in which were recorded the names of those who respected the Lord and honored his name. 3:17“They will belong to me,” says the Lord who rules over all, “in the day when I prepare my own special property.31 I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. 3:18Then once more you will see that I make a distinction between32 the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not.
Footnotes
- 23 Heb “your words are hard [or “strong”] against me”; cf. “said harsh things against me”; , “said terrible things about me.”
- 24 Heb “What [is the] profit”; “What did we gain.”
- 25 The people’s public display of self-effacing piety has gone unrewarded by the Lord. The reason, of course, is that it was blatantly hypocritical.
- 26 Heb “built up” (so ); , “prosper”; “get rich.”
- 27 Or “test”; , “put God to the test.”
- 28 Or “fear” (so ); “revered”; “honored.”
- 29 Heb “heard and listened”; “listened attentively.”
- 30 The scroll mentioned here is a “memory book” (סֵפֶר זִכָּרוֹן, sefer zikkaron) in which the Lord keeps an ongoing record of the names of all the redeemed (see Exod 32:32; Isa 4:3; Dan 12:1; Rev 20:12–15).
- 31 The Hebrew word סְגֻלָּה (ségullah, “special property”) is a technical term referring to all the recipients of God’s redemptive grace, especially Israel (Exod 19:5; Deut 7:6; 14:2; 26:18). The Lord says here that he will not forget even one individual in the day of judgment and reward.
- 32 Heb “you will see between.” Cf. , , “see the difference.”

“Your words have been hard against me, says the Lord. But you say, ‘How have we spoken against you?’ You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God. What is the profit of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts? And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape.’ ”
Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another. The Lord paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name. “They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. Then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
“You have spoken arrogantly against me,” says the Lord.
“Yet you ask, ‘What have we said against you?’
“You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord Almighty? But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly evildoers prosper, and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’ ”
Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the Lord and honored his name.
“On the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty, “they will be my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son who serves him. And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.

“Your words against me are harsh,” says the Lord.
Yet you ask, “What have we spoken against you?”
You have said, “It is useless to serve God. What have we gained by keeping his requirements and walking mournfully before the Lord of Armies? So now we consider the arrogant to be fortunate. Not only do those who commit wickedness prosper, they even test God and escape.”
At that time those who feared the Lord spoke to one another. The Lord took notice and listened. So a book of remembrance was written before him for those who feared the Lord and had high regard for his name. “They will be mine,” says the Lord of Armies, “my own possession on the day I am preparing. I will have compassion on them as a man has compassion on his son who serves him. So you will again see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

“You have said terrible things about me,” says the Lord.
“But you say, ‘What do you mean? What have we said against you?’
“You have said, ‘What’s the use of serving God? What have we gained by obeying his commands or by trying to show the Lord of Heaven’s Armies that we are sorry for our sins? From now on we will call the arrogant blessed. For those who do evil get rich, and those who dare God to punish them suffer no harm.’ ”
Then those who feared the Lord spoke with each other, and the Lord listened to what they said. In his presence, a scroll of remembrance was written to record the names of those who feared him and always thought about the honor of his name.
“They will be my people,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “On the day when I act in judgment, they will be my own special treasure. I will spare them as a father spares an obedient child. Then you will again see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.”

“Your words have been harsh against me,” says Yahweh. “But you say, ‘How have we spoken together against you?’ You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God! What is the gain if we keep his requirements, and if we walk as mourners before Yahweh of hosts? And now we are calling the arrogant blessed! Not only do those who do wickedness prosper; they also test God and they escape!’ ”
Then those who revered Yahweh spoke with one another. And Yahweh listened attentively and heard, and a scroll of remembrance was written before him of those who revere Yahweh and ponder his name. “They will be mine,” says Yahweh of hosts, “on the day that I am acting, my treasured possession. I will have compassion on them as a man has compassion on his son who serves him. You will return and see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not serve him.

KJV 1900King James Version
Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord.
Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee?
Ye have said, It is vain to serve God:
And what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance,
And that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts?
And now we call the proud happy;
Yea, they that work wickedness are set up;
Yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.
Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another:
And the Lord hearkened, and heard it,
And a book of remembrance was written before him
For them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.
And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts,
In that day when I make up my jewels;
And I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked,
Between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.
