6:3or has found something lost and denies it and swears falsely6 concerning any one of the things that someone might do to sin7—6:4when it happens that he sins and he is found guilty,8 then he must return whatever he had stolen, or whatever he had extorted, or the thing that he had held in trust,9 or the lost thing that he had found, 6:5or anything about which he swears falsely.10 He must restore it in full11 and add one fifth to it; he must give it to its owner when he is found guilty.126:6Then he must bring his guilt offering to the Lord, a flawless ram from the flock, convertible into silver shekels,13 for a guilt offering to the priest. 6:7So the priest will make atonement14 on his behalf before the Lord and he will be forgiven15 for whatever he has done to become guilty.”16
Sacrificial Instructions for the Priests: The Burnt Offering
6:8 (6:1)17 Then the Lord spoke to Moses:186:9“Command Aaron and his sons, ‘This is the law of the burnt offering. The burnt offering is to remain on the hearth19 on the altar all night until morning, and the fire of the altar must be kept burning on it.20
Footnotes
- 6 Heb “and swears on falsehood”; cf. “deny something while under oath.”
- 7 Heb “on one from all which the man shall do to sin in them.”
- 8 Heb “and it shall happen, when he sins and becomes guilty,” which is both resumptive of the previous (vv. 2–3) and the conclusion to the protasis (cf. “then” introducing the next clause as the apodosis). In this case, “becomes guilty” (cf. , ) probably refers to his legal status as one who has been convicted of a crime in court; thus the translation “he is found guilty.” See R. E. Averbeck, 1:.
- 9 Heb “that had been held in trust with him.”
- 10 Heb “or from all which he swears on it to falsehood.”
- 11 Heb “in its head.” This refers “the full amount” in terms of the “principal,” the original item or amount obtained illegally (J. Milgrom, Leviticus [], 1:; J. E. Hartley, Leviticus [], ).
- 12 Heb “to whom it is to him he shall give it in the day of his being guilty.” The present translation is based on the view that he has been found guilty through the legal process (see the note on v. above; cf., e.g., and B. A. Levine, Leviticus [], ). Others translate the latter part as “in the day he offers his guilt [reparation] offering” (e.g., and J. E. Hartley, Leviticus [], , ), or “in the day he realizes his guilt” (e.g., and J. Milgrom, Leviticus [], 1:, ).
- 13 The words “into silver shekels” are supplied here. See the full expression in Lev 5:15, and compare 5:18. Cf. “or its equivalent”; “or the animal’s equivalent value in silver.”
- 14 Regarding “make atonement” see the note on .
- 15 Heb “there shall be forgiveness to him” or “it shall be forgiven to him” ( similar).
- 16 Heb “on one from all which he does to become guilty in it”; “whatever guilt he may have incurred.”
- 17 Lev 6:8 in the English Bible = 6:1 in the Hebrew text. See also the note on .
- 18 The following paragraphs are Lev 6:8–30 in the English Bible but 6:1–23 in the Hebrew text. This initial verse makes the special priestly regulations for the people’s burnt and grain offerings into a single unit (i.e., Lev 6:8–18 [6:1–11 ]; cf. Lev 1–2 above). Note also the separate introductions for various priestly regulations in Lev 6:19 [12 ], 24 [17 ], and for the common people in Lev 7:22, 28 below.
- 19 Heb “It is the burnt offering on the hearth.”
- 20 Heb “in it.” In this context “in it” apparently refers to the “hearth” which was on top of the altar.

or has found something lost and lied about it, swearing falsely—in any of all the things that people do and sin thereby— if he has sinned and has realized his guilt and will restore what he took by robbery or what he got by oppression or the deposit that was committed to him or the lost thing that he found or anything about which he has sworn falsely, he shall restore it in full and shall add a fifth to it, and give it to him to whom it belongs on the day he realizes his guilt. And he shall bring to the priest as his compensation to the Lord a ram without blemish out of the flock, or its equivalent, for a guilt offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord, and he shall be forgiven for any of the things that one may do and thereby become guilty.”
The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering. The burnt offering shall be on the hearth on the altar all night until the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it.

or if they find lost property and lie about it, or if they swear falsely about any such sin that people may commit—when they sin in any of these ways and realize their guilt, they must return what they have stolen or taken by extortion, or what was entrusted to them, or the lost property they found, or whatever it was they swore falsely about. They must make restitution in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering. And as a penalty they must bring to the priest, that is, to the Lord, their guilt offering, a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. In this way the priest will make atonement for them before the Lord, and they will be forgiven for any of the things they did that made them guilty.”
The Lord said to Moses: “Give Aaron and his sons this command: ‘These are the regulations for the burnt offering: The burnt offering is to remain on the altar hearth throughout the night, till morning, and the fire must be kept burning on the altar.

or finds something lost and lies about it; or swears falsely about any of the sinful things a person may do—once he has sinned and acknowledged his guilt—he must return what he stole or defrauded, or the deposit entrusted to him, or the lost item he found, or anything else about which he swore falsely. He will make full restitution for it and add a fifth of its value to it. He is to pay it to its owner on the day he acknowledges his guilt. Then he is to bring his guilt offering to the Lord: an unblemished ram from the flock according to your assessment of its value as a guilt offering to the priest. In this way the priest will make atonement on his behalf before the Lord, and he will be forgiven for anything he may have done to incur guilt.”
The Lord spoke to Moses: “Command Aaron and his sons: This is the law of the burnt offering; the burnt offering itself must remain on the altar’s hearth all night until morning, while the fire of the altar is kept burning on it.

or you find lost property and lie about it, or you lie while swearing to tell the truth, or you commit any other such sin. If you have sinned in any of these ways, you are guilty. You must give back whatever you stole, or the money you took by extortion, or the security deposit, or the lost property you found, or anything obtained by swearing falsely. You must make restitution by paying the full price plus an additional 20 percent to the person you have harmed. On the same day you must present a guilt offering. As a guilt offering to the Lord, you must bring to the priest your own ram with no defects, or you may buy one of equal value. Through this process, the priest will purify you before the Lord, making you right with him, and you will be forgiven for any of these sins you have committed.”
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Give Aaron and his sons the following instructions regarding the burnt offering. The burnt offering must be left on top of the altar until the next morning, and the fire on the altar must be kept burning all night.

Or have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein: Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found, Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering. And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the Lord, a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest: And the priest shall make an atonement for him before the Lord: and it shall be forgiven him for any thing of all that he hath done in trespassing therein.
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering: It is the burnt offering, because of the burning upon the altar all night unto the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be burning in it.
