Footnotes

  1. 32 Heb “It must not be baked leavened” (cf. Lev 2:11). The noun “leaven” is traditional in English versions (cf. , , , ), but “yeast” is more commonly used today.
  2. 33 Heb “holiness of holinesses [or holy of holies] it is”; cf. “most sacred.”
  3. 34 Or “a perpetual regulation”; cf. “a permanent ordinance”; “as their perpetual due.”
  4. 35 Heb “for your generations”; cf. “for the generations to come.”
  5. 36 Heb “touches them”; the referent has been specified in the translation for clarity. In this context “them” must refer to the “gifts” of the Lord.
  6. 37 Or “anyone/anything that touches them shall become holy” (J. Milgrom, Leviticus [], 1:). The question is whether this refers to the contagious nature of holy objects (cf. , , , , ) or whether it simply sets forth a demand that anyone who touches the holy gifts of the Lord must be a holy person (cf. ). See R. E. Averbeck, 2:.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their portion of my food offerings. It is a thing most holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering. Every male among the children of Aaron may eat of it, as decreed forever throughout your generations, from the Lord’s food offerings. Whatever touches them shall become holy.”

NIVNew International Version (2011)

It must not be baked with yeast; I have given it as their share of the food offerings presented to me. Like the sin offering and the guilt offering, it is most holy. Any male descendant of Aaron may eat it. For all generations to come it is his perpetual share of the food offerings presented to the Lord. Whatever touches them will become holy.’ ”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

It must not be baked with yeast; I have assigned it as their portion from my food offerings. It is especially holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering. Any male among Aaron’s descendants may eat it. It is a permanent portion throughout your generations from the food offerings to the Lord. Anything that touches the offerings will become holy.”

NLTNew Living Translation

Remember, it must never be prepared with yeast. I have given it to the priests as their share of the special gifts presented to me. Like the sin offering and the guilt offering, it is most holy. Any of Aaron’s male descendants may eat from the special gifts presented to the Lord. This is their permanent right from generation to generation. Anyone or anything that touches these offerings will become holy.”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

It must not be baked with yeast. I have given it as their share from my offerings made by fire. It is a most holy thing, like the sin offering and like the guilt offering. Every male among Aaron’s sons may eat it as a lasting rule among your generations from the offerings made by fire belonging to Yahweh. Anything that touches them will become holy.’ ”

KJV 1900King James Version

It shall not be baken with leaven. I have given it unto them for their portion of my offerings made by fire; it is most holy, as is the sin offering, and as the trespass offering. All the males among the children of Aaron shall eat of it. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations concerning the offerings of the Lord made by fire: every one that toucheth them shall be holy.
