A Swelling on the Skin

13:9“When someone has a diseased infection,30 he must be brought to the priest. 13:10The priest will then examine it,31 and if32 a white swelling is on the skin, it has turned the hair white, and there is raw flesh in the swelling,3313:11it is a chronic34 disease on the skin of his body,35 so the priest is to pronounce him unclean.36 The priest37 must not merely quarantine him, for he is unclean.38

Footnotes

  1. 30 Heb “When there is an infection of disease in a man.” The term for “a man; a human being” (אָדָם, ’adam; see the note on and cf. v. 2 above) refers to any person among “mankind,” male or female. For the rendering “diseased infection” see the note on v. above.
  2. 31 Heb “and the priest shall see.” The pronoun “it” is unexpressed, but it should be assumed and it refers to the infection (cf. the note on v. above).
  3. 32 Heb “and behold” (so , ).
  4. 33 Heb “and rawness [i.e., something living] of living flesh is in the swelling”; , , “quick raw flesh.”
  5. 34 The term rendered here “chronic” is a Niphal participle meaning “grown old” ( II ישׁן nif.2). The idea is that this is an old enduring skin disease that keeps on developing or recurring.
  6. 35 Heb “in the skin of his flesh” as opposed to the head or the beard (v. 29; cf. v. 2 above).
  7. 36 This is the declarative Piel of the verb טָמֵא (tame’, cf. the note on v. above).
  8. 37 Heb “he”; the referent (the priest) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
  9. 38 Instead of just the normal quarantine isolation, this condition calls for the more drastic and enduring response stated in Lev 13:45–46. Raw flesh, of course, sometimes oozes blood to one degree or another, and blood flows are by nature impure (see, e.g., Lev 12 and 15; cf. J. E. Hartley, Leviticus [], ).

ESVEnglish Standard Version

“When a man is afflicted with a leprous disease, he shall be brought to the priest, and the priest shall look. And if there is a white swelling in the skin that has turned the hair white, and there is raw flesh in the swelling, it is a chronic leprous disease in the skin of his body, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean. He shall not shut him up, for he is unclean.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“When anyone has a defiling skin disease, they must be brought to the priest. The priest is to examine them, and if there is a white swelling in the skin that has turned the hair white and if there is raw flesh in the swelling, it is a chronic skin disease and the priest shall pronounce them unclean. He is not to isolate them, because they are already unclean.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

“When a case of serious skin disease may have developed on a person, he is to be brought to the priest. The priest will examine him. If there is a white swelling on the skin that has turned the hair white, and there is a patch of raw flesh in the swelling, it is a chronic serious disease on the skin of his body, and the priest must pronounce him unclean. He need not quarantine him, for he is unclean.

NLTNew Living Translation

“Anyone who develops a serious skin disease must go to the priest for an examination. If the priest finds a white swelling on the skin, and some hair on the spot has turned white, and there is an open sore in the affected area, it is a chronic skin disease, and the priest must pronounce the person ceremonially unclean. In such cases the person need not be quarantined, for it is obvious that the skin is defiled by the disease.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

“When an infectious skin disease is on a person and he is brought to the priest, the priest shall examine it, and if a white swelling is on the skin and it turns the hair white and raw flesh is in the swelling, it is a chronic infectious skin disease on his body’s skin, and the priest shall declare him unclean; he shall not confine him, because he is unclean.

KJV 1900King James Version

When the plague of leprosy is in a man, then he shall be brought unto the priest; And the priest shall see him: and, behold, if the rising be white in the skin, and it have turned the hair white, and there be quick raw flesh in the rising; It is an old leprosy in the skin of his flesh, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean, and shall not shut him up: for he is unclean.
