Footnotes

  1. 40 Most witnesses have “Jesus” here, either with the article (אc C2 D L Ws Ψ 086 𝔐 lat) or without (א* A Θ f1, 13 ), while several important and early witnesses lack the name (𝔓66, 75 B C* 33vid ). It is unlikely that scribes would have deliberately expunged the name of Jesus from the text here, especially since it aids the reader with the flow of the dialogue. Further, that the name occurs both anarthrously and with the article suggests that it was a later addition. (For similar arguments, see the note on “woman” in ).
  2. 41 Grk “come here” (“back” is implied).
  3. 42 Grk “answered and said to him.”
  4. 43 Grk “Well have you said.”
  5. 44 The word order in Jesus’ reply is reversed from the woman’s original statement. The word “husband” in Jesus’ reply is placed in an emphatic position.
  6. 45 Grk “the one you have.”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

“Go call your husband,” he told her, “and come back here.”

NLTNew Living Translation

“Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her.

“I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied.

Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband—for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

He said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” The woman answered and said to him, “I do not have a husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have said rightly, ‘I do not have a husband,’ for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you have now is not your husband; this you have said truthfully!”

KJV 1900King James Version
