Jesus Prays for the Disciples
17:6“I have revealed14 your name to the men15 you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you,16 and you gave them to me, and they have obeyed17 your word. 17:7Now they understand18 that everything19 you have given me comes from you, 17:8because I have given them the words you have given me. They20 accepted21 them22 and really23 understand24 that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 17:9I am praying25 on behalf of them. I am not praying26 on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those you have given me, because they belong to you.27
Footnotes
- 14 Or “made known,” “disclosed.”
- 15 Here “men” is retained as a translation for ἀνθρώποις (anthrōpois) rather than the more generic “people” because in context it specifically refers to the eleven men Jesus had chosen as apostles (Judas had already departed, John 13:30). If one understands the referent here to be the broader group of Jesus’ followers that included both men and women, a translation like “to the people” should be used here instead.
- 16 Grk “Yours they were.”
- 17 Or “have kept.”
- 18 Or “they have come to know,” or “they have learned.”
- 19 Grk “all things.”
- 20 Grk And they.” The conjunction καί (kai, “and”) has not been translated here in keeping with the tendency of contemporary English style to use shorter sentences.
- 21 Or “received.”
- 22 The word “them” is not in the Greek text, but is implied. Direct objects were often omitted in Greek when clear from the context.
- 23 Or “truly.”
- 24 Or have come to know.”
- 25 Grk “I am asking.”
- 26 Grk “I am not asking.”
- 27 Or “because they are yours.”

KJV 1900King James Version
I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
