10:25Jesus replied,65 “I told you and you do not believe. The deeds66 I do in my Father’s name testify about me. 10:26But you refuse to believe because you are not my sheep. 10:27My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 10:28I give67 them eternal life, and they will never perish;68 no one will snatch69 them from my hand. 10:29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all,70 and no one can snatch71 them from my Father’s hand. 10:30The Father and I72 are one.”73
Footnotes
- 65 Grk “answered them.”
- 66 Or “the works.”
- 67 Grk “And I give.”
- 68 Or “will never die” or “will never be lost.”
- 69 Or “no one will seize.”
- 70 Or “is superior to all.”
- 71 Or “no one can seize.”
- 72 Grk “I and the Father.” The order has been reversed to reflect English style.
- 73 The phrase ἕν ἐσμεν (hen esmen) is a significant assertion with trinitarian implications. ἕν is neuter, not masculine, so the assertion is not that Jesus and the Father are one person, but one “thing.” Identity of the two persons is not what is asserted, but essential unity (unity of essence).

Jesus replied, “I have already told you, and you don’t believe me. The proof is the work I do in my Father’s name. But you don’t believe me because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”

Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me. But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one.
