Footnotes

  1. 22 This construction is an adverbial clause using the temporal preposition, the infinitive from רִיב (riv, “contend”), and the suffix which is the subjective genitive.
  2. 23 Heb “arises.” The reads “takes vengeance,” an interpretation that is somewhat correct but unnecessary. The verb “to rise” would mean “to confront in judgment.”
  3. 24 The verb פָקַד (paqad) means “to visit,” but with God as the subject it means any divine intervention for blessing or cursing, anything God does that changes a person’s life. Here it is “visit to judge.”
  4. 25 Heb “him,” but the plural pronoun has been used in the translation to indicate that the referent is the servants mentioned in v. 13 (since the previous “him” in v. 14 refers to God).

“If I have rejected the cause of my manservant or my maidservant,

when they brought a complaint against me,

what then shall I do when God rises up?

When he makes inquiry, what shall I answer him?

Did not he who made me in the womb make him?

And did not one fashion us in the womb?

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“If I have denied justice to any of my servants,

whether male or female,

when they had a grievance against me,

what will I do when God confronts me?

What will I answer when called to account?

Did not he who made me in the womb make them?

Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?

CSBChristian Standard Bible

If I have dismissed the case of my male or female servants

when they made a complaint against me,

what could I do when God stands up to judge?

How should I answer him when he calls me to account?

Did not the one who made me in the womb also make them?

Did not the same God form us both in the womb?

NLTNew Living Translation

“If I have been unfair to my male or female servants

when they brought their complaints to me,

how could I face God?

What could I say when he questioned me?

For God created both me and my servants.

He created us both in the womb.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

“If I have rejected my male or female slave’s case

when their complaint was against me,

then what shall I do when God rises up?

And when he enquires, how shall I answer him?

Did not he who made me in the womb make them?

And did not one fashion us in the womb?

KJV 1900King James Version

If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant,

When they contended with me;

What then shall I do when God riseth up?

And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

Did not he that made me in the womb make him?

And did not one fashion us in the womb?
