20:8For whenever I prophesy,12 I must cry out,13

“Violence and destruction are coming!”14

This message from the Lord15 has made me

an object of continual insults and derision.

20:9Sometimes I think, “I will make no mention of his message.

I will not speak as his messenger16 any more.”

But then17 his message becomes like a fire

locked up inside of me, burning in my heart and soul.18

I grow weary of trying to hold it in;

I cannot contain it.

Footnotes

  1. 12 Heb “speak,” but the speaking is in the context of speaking as a prophet.
  2. 13 Heb “I cry out, I proclaim.”
  3. 14 Heb “Violence and destruction.” The words “Violence and destruction …” are a synopsis of his messages of judgment. Jeremiah is lamenting that his ministry up to this point has been one of judgment and has brought him nothing but ridicule because the Lord has not carried out his threats. He appears in the eyes of the people to be a false prophet.
  4. 15 Heb “the word of the Lord.” For the use of כִּי … כִּי (ki … ki) here in the sense of “for … and” see 432 כּי 10.
  5. 16 Heb “speak in his name.” This idiom occurs in passages where someone functions as the messenger under the authority of another. See Exod 5:23; Deut 18:19, 29:20; Jer 14:14. The antecedent in the first line is quite commonly misidentified as being “him,” i.e., the Lord. Comparison, however, with the rest of the context, especially the consequential clause “then it becomes” (וְהָיָה, véhayah), and Jer 23:36 shows that it is “the word of the Lord.”
  6. 17 The English sentence has again been restructured for the sake of English style. The Hebrew construction involves two vav consecutive perfects in a condition and consequence relation, “If I say to myself … then it [his word] becomes.” See §112.kk for the construction.
  7. 18 Heb “It is in my heart like a burning fire, shut up in my bones.” In addition to standing as part for the whole, the “bones” for the person (e.g., Ps 35:10), the bones were associated with fear (e.g., Job 4:14) and with pain (e.g., Job 33:19, Ps 102:3 [102:4 ]) and joy or sorrow (e.g., Ps 51:8 [51:10 ]). As has been mentioned several times, the heart was connected with intellectual and volitional concerns.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

For whenever I speak, I cry out,

I shout, “Violence and destruction!”

For the word of the Lord has become for me

a reproach and derision all day long.

If I say, “I will not mention him,

or speak any more in his name,”

there is in my heart as it were a burning fire

shut up in my bones,

and I am weary with holding it in,

and I cannot.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Whenever I speak, I cry out

proclaiming violence and destruction.

So the word of the Lord has brought me

insult and reproach all day long.

But if I say, “I will not mention his word

or speak anymore in his name,”

his word is in my heart like a fire,

a fire shut up in my bones.

I am weary of holding it in;

indeed, I cannot.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

For whenever I speak, I cry out,

I proclaim, “Violence and destruction!”

so the word of the Lord has become my

constant disgrace and derision.

I say, “I won’t mention him

or speak any longer in his name.”

But his message becomes a fire burning in my heart,

shut up in my bones.

I become tired of holding it in,

and I cannot prevail.

NLTNew Living Translation

When I speak, the words burst out.

“Violence and destruction!” I shout.

So these messages from the Lord

have made me a household joke.

But if I say I’ll never mention the Lord

or speak in his name,

his word burns in my heart like a fire.

It’s like a fire in my bones!

I am worn out trying to hold it in!

I can’t do it!

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

For as often as I speak,

I must cry out violence and destruction.

I must shout, for the word of Yahweh has become for me

a disgrace and derision all day long.

But if I say, “I will not mention him

and I will no longer speak in his name,”

then it becomes in my heart like a fire burning,

locked up in my bones,

and I struggle to contain it,

and I am not able.

KJV 1900King James Version

For since I spake, I cried out,

I cried violence and spoil;

Because the word of the Lord was made a reproach unto me,

And a derision, daily.

Then I said, I will not make mention of him,

Nor speak any more in his name.

But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones,

And I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.
