Footnotes

  1. 38 Heb “and they devoured Israel with all the mouth”; “with open mouth”; “With bared fangs.”
  2. 39 Heb “in all this his anger is not turned, and still his hand is outstretched.” One could translate in the past tense here (and in 9:17b and 21b), but the appearance of the refrain in 10:4b, where it follows a woe oracle prophesying a future judgment, suggests it is a dramatic portrait of the judge which did not change throughout this period of past judgment and will remain unchanged in the future. The English present tense is chosen to best reflect this dramatic mood. (See also 5:25b, where the refrain appears following a dramatic description of coming judgment.)
  3. 40 This verse describes the people’s response to the judgment described in vv. 11–12. The perfects are understood as indicating simple past.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

The Syrians on the east and the Philistines on the west

devour Israel with open mouth.

For all this his anger has not turned away,

and his hand is stretched out still.

The people did not turn to him who struck them,

nor inquire of the Lord of hosts.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Arameans from the east and Philistines from the west

have devoured Israel with open mouth.

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,

his hand is still upraised.

But the people have not returned to him who struck them,

nor have they sought the Lord Almighty.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Aram from the east and Philistia from the west

have consumed Israel with open mouths.

In all this, his anger has not turned away,

and his hand is still raised to strike.

The people did not turn to him who struck them;

they did not seek the Lord of Armies.

NLTNew Living Translation

The Syrians from the east and the Philistines from the west

will bare their fangs and devour Israel.

But even then the Lord’s anger will not be satisfied.

His fist is still poised to strike.

For after all this punishment, the people will still not repent.

They will not seek the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Aram from the east

and Philistines from the west—

and they devoured Israel with the whole mouth.

He has not turned away his anger in all of this,

and his hand is still stretched out.

And the people did not turn to the one who struck it,

and they did not seek Yahweh of hosts.

KJV 1900King James Version

The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind;

And they shall devour Israel with open mouth.

For all this his anger is not turned away,

But his hand is stretched out still.

For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them,

Neither do they seek the Lord of hosts.
