59:19In the west, people respect42 the Lord’s reputation;43
in the east they recognize his splendor.44
For he comes like a rushing45 stream
driven on by wind sent from the Lord.46
59:20“A protector47 comes to Zion,
to those in Jacob who repent of their rebellious deeds,”48 says the Lord.
59:21“As for me, this is my promise to49 them,” says the Lord. “My spirit, who is upon you, and my words, which I have placed in your mouth, will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children and descendants from this time forward,”50 says the Lord.
Footnotes
- 42 Heb “fear.” A few medieval Hebrew read “see.”
- 43 Heb “and they fear from the west the name of the Lord.”
- 44 Heb “and from the rising of the sun his splendor.”
- 45 Heb “narrow”; , , “pent-up.”
- 46 Heb “the wind of the Lord drives it on.” The term רוּחַ (ruakh) could be translated “breath” here (see 30:28).
- 47 Or “redeemer.” See the note at .
- 48 Heb “and to those who turn from rebellion in Jacob.”
- 49 Or “my covenant with” (so many English versions); “my agreement with.” The Lord promises the repentant (note “to them”) that they and their offspring will possess his spirit and function as his spokesmen. In this regard they follow in the footsteps of the Lord’s special servant. See 42:1; 49:2; 51:16.
- 50 Heb “from now and on into the future.”

So they shall fear the name of Yahweh from the west,
and his glory from the sunrise,
for he will come like a narrow stream;
the wind of Yahweh drives it on.
“And a redeemer will come to Zion,
to those in Jacob who turn away from transgression,”
declares Yahweh.
“And as for me, this is my covenant with them, says Yahweh:
my spirit that is upon you,

KJV 1900King James Version
So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west,
And his glory from the rising of the sun.
When the enemy shall come in like a flood,
The Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.
And the Redeemer shall come to Zion,
And unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord.
As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord;
My spirit that is upon thee,
And my words which I have put in thy mouth,
Shall not depart out of thy mouth,
Nor out of the mouth of thy seed,
Nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the Lord,
From henceforth and for ever.
