58:11The Lord will continually lead you;

he will feed you even in parched regions.27

He will give you renewed strength,28

and you will be like a well-watered garden,

like a spring that continually produces water.

58:12Your perpetual ruins will be rebuilt;29

you will reestablish the ancient foundations.

You will be called, ‘The one who repairs broken walls,

the one who makes the streets inhabitable again.’30

58:13You must31 observe the Sabbath32

rather than doing anything you please on my holy day.33

You must look forward to the Sabbath34

and treat the Lord’s holy day with respect.35

You must treat it with respect by refraining from your normal activities,

and by refraining from your selfish pursuits and from making business deals.36

58:14Then you will find joy in your relationship to the Lord,37

and I will give you great prosperity,38

and cause crops to grow on the land I gave to your ancestor Jacob.”39

Know for certain that the Lord has spoken.40

Read in Logos
Isaiah 58:11: And the LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

Footnotes

  1. 27 Heb “he will satisfy in parched regions your appetite.”
  2. 28 Heb “and your bones he will strengthen.”
  3. 29 Heb “and they will build from you ancient ruins.”
  4. 30 The Hebrew text has “the one who restores paths for dwelling.” The idea of “paths to dwell in” is not a common notion. Some have proposed emending נְתִיבוֹת (nétivot, “paths”) to נְתִיצוֹת (nétitsot, “ruins”), a passive participle from נָתַץ (natats, “tear down”; see *נְתִיצָה), because tighter parallelism with the preceding line is achieved. However, none of the textual sources support this emendation. The line may mean that paths must be repaired in order to dwell in the land.
  5. 31 Lit., “if you.” In the Hebrew text vv. 13–14 are one long conditional sentence. The protasis (“if” clauses appear in v. 13), with the apodosis (“then” clause) appearing in v. 14.
  6. 32 Heb “if you turn from the Sabbath your feet.”
  7. 33 Heb “[from] doing your desires on my holy day.” The Qumran scroll 1QIsaa supplies the preposition מִן (min) on “doing.”
  8. 34 Heb “and call the Sabbath a pleasure”; , , , , “a delight.”
  9. 35 Heb “and [call] the holy [day] of the Lord honored.” On קָדוֹשׁ (qadosh, “holy”) as indicating a time period, see 872 2.e (cf. also Neh 8:9–11).
  10. 36 Heb “and you honor it [by refraining] from accomplishing your ways, from finding your desire and speaking a word.” It is unlikely that the last phrase (“speaking a word”) is a prohibition against talking on the Sabbath; instead it probably refers to making transactions or plans (see Hos 10:4). Some see here a reference to idle talk (cf. 2 Sam 19:30).
  11. 37 For a parallel use of the phrase “find joy in” (Hitpael of עָנַג [’anag] followed by the preposition עַל [’al]), see Ps 37:4.
  12. 38 Heb “and I will cause you to ride upon the heights of the land.” The statement seems to be an allusion to Deut 32:13, where it is associated, as here, with God’s abundant provision of food.
  13. 39 Heb “and I will cause you to eat the inheritance of Jacob your father.” The Hebrew term נַחֲלָה (nakhalah) likely stands by metonymy for the crops that grow on Jacob’s “inheritance” (i.e., the land he inherited as a result of God’s promise).
  14. 40 Heb “for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” The introductory כִּי (ki) may be asseverative (as reflected in the translation) or causal/explanatory, explaining why the preceding promise will become reality (because it is guaranteed by the divine word).

And the Lord will guide you continually

and satisfy your desire in scorched places

and make your bones strong;

and you shall be like a watered garden,

like a spring of water,

whose waters do not fail.

And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;

you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;

you shall be called the repairer of the breach,

the restorer of streets to dwell in.

“If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,

from doing your pleasure on my holy day,

and call the Sabbath a delight

and the holy day of the Lord honorable;

if you honor it, not going your own ways,

or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly;

then you shall take delight in the Lord,

and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;

I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,

for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

NIVNew International Version (2011)

The Lord will guide you always;

he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land

and will strengthen your frame.

You will be like a well-watered garden,

like a spring whose waters never fail.

Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins

and will raise up the age-old foundations;

you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,

Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

“If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath

and from doing as you please on my holy day,

if you call the Sabbath a delight

and the Lord’s holy day honorable,

and if you honor it by not going your own way

and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,

then you will find your joy in the Lord,

and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land

and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.”

For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

The Lord will always lead you,

satisfy you in a parched land,

and strengthen your bones.

You will be like a watered garden

and like a spring whose water never runs dry.

Some of you will rebuild the ancient ruins;

you will restore the foundations laid long ago;

you will be called the repairer of broken walls,

the restorer of streets where people live.

“If you keep from desecrating the Sabbath,

from doing whatever you want on my holy day;

if you call the Sabbath a delight,

and the holy day of the Lord honorable;

if you honor it, not going your own ways,

seeking your own pleasure, or talking business;

then you will delight in the Lord,

and I will make you ride over the heights of the land,

and let you enjoy the heritage of your father Jacob.”

For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

NLTNew Living Translation

The Lord will guide you continually,

giving you water when you are dry

and restoring your strength.

You will be like a well-watered garden,

like an ever-flowing spring.

Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities.

Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls

and a restorer of homes.

“Keep the Sabbath day holy.

Don’t pursue your own interests on that day,

but enjoy the Sabbath

and speak of it with delight as the Lord’s holy day.

Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day,

and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly.

Then the Lord will be your delight.

I will give you great honor

and satisfy you with the inheritance I promised to your ancestor Jacob.

I, the Lord, have spoken!”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And Yahweh will lead you continually, and satisfy your soul in a barren land,

and he will strengthen your bones,

and you shall be like a well-watered garden,

and like a spring of water whose water does not fail.

And they shall rebuild ancient ruins from you;

you shall erect the foundations of many generations,

and you shall be called the bricklayer of the breach,

the restorer of paths to live in.

If you hold your foot back from the Sabbath,

from doing your affairs on my holy day,

if you call the Sabbath a pleasure,

the holy day of Yahweh honorable,

if you honor him more than doing your ways,

than finding your affairs and speaking a word,

then you shall take your pleasure in Yahweh,

and I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth,

and I will feed you the heritage of Jacob your ancestor,

for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken.”

KJV 1900King James Version

And the Lord shall guide thee continually,

And satisfy thy soul in drought,

And make fat thy bones:

And thou shalt be like a watered garden,

And like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places:

Thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations;

And thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach,

The restorer of paths to dwell in.

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath,

From doing thy pleasure on my holy day;

And call the sabbath a delight,

The holy of the Lord, honourable;

And shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways,

Nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord;

And I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth,

And feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father:

For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
