Read in Logos
Genesis 35:3: Then let us arise and go up to Bethel, so that I may make there an altar to the God who answers me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone…

Footnotes

  1. 4 Heb “which are in your midst.”
  2. 5 The actions of removing false gods, becoming ritually clean, and changing garments would become necessary steps in Israel when approaching the Lord in worship.
  3. 6 Heb “let us arise and let us go up.” The first cohortative gives the statement a sense of urgency.
  4. 7 The cohortative with the prefixed conjunction here indicates purpose or consequence.
  5. 8 Heb “day of distress.” See Ps 20:1 which utilizes similar language.
  6. 9 Heb “in the way in which I went.” Jacob alludes here to God’s promise to be with him (see Gen 28:20).
  7. 10 Heb “in their hand.”
  8. 11 On the basis of a comparison with Gen 34 and Num 31, G. J. Wenham argues that the foreign gods and the rings could have been part of the plunder that came from the destruction of Shechem (Genesis [], 2:).
  9. 12 Jacob buried them. On the burial of the gods, see E. Nielson, “The Burial of the Foreign Gods,” 8 (1954/55): 102–22.
  10. 13 Or “terebinth.”

NLTNew Living Translation

So Jacob told everyone in his household, “Get rid of all your pagan idols, purify yourselves, and put on clean clothing. We are now going to Bethel, where I will build an altar to the God who answered my prayers when I was in distress. He has been with me wherever I have gone.”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Then Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods that are in your midst and purify yourselves and change your garments. Then let us make ready and let us go up to Bethel, so that I can make an altar there to the God who answered me in the day of my trouble, and who has been with me on the way that I have gone.” So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods that were in their hands, and the ornamental rings that were in their ears. And Jacob buried them under the oak which was near Shechem.
