Read in Logos
Genesis 29:20: So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.

Footnotes

  1. 31 Heb “and the eyes of Leah were tender.” The disjunctive clause (introduced here by a conjunction and a noun) continues the parenthesis begun in v. 16. It is not clear what is meant by “tender” (or “delicate”) eyes. The expression may mean she had appealing eyes (cf. , , ), though some suggest that they were plain, not having the brightness normally expected. Either way, she did not measure up to her gorgeous sister.
  2. 32 Heb “and Rachel was beautiful of form and beautiful of appearance.”
  3. 33 Heb “Jacob loved.”
  4. 34 Heb “Better my giving her to you than my giving her to another man.”
  5. 35 Heb “in exchange for Rachel.”
  6. 36 But they seemed like only a few days to him. This need not mean that the time passed quickly. More likely it means that the price seemed insignificant when compared to what he was getting in the bargain.
  7. 37 Heb “because of his love for her.” The words “was so great” are supplied for stylistic reasons.

Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance. Jacob loved Rachel. NIVNew International Version (2011)

Leah had weak eyes, but Rachel had a lovely figure and was beautiful. Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, “I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel.”

Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.” So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Leah had tender eyes, but Rachel was shapely and beautiful. Jacob loved Rachel, so he answered Laban, “I’ll work for you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.”

Laban replied, “Better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay with me.” So Jacob worked seven years for Rachel, and they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.

NLTNew Living Translation

There was no sparkle in Leah’s eyes, but Rachel had a beautiful figure and a lovely face. Since Jacob was in love with Rachel, he told her father, “I’ll work for you for seven years if you’ll give me Rachel, your younger daughter, as my wife.”

“Agreed!” Laban replied. “I’d rather give her to you than to anyone else. Stay and work with me.” So Jacob worked seven years to pay for Rachel. But his love for her was so strong that it seemed to him but a few days.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Now the eyes of Leah were dull, but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance. And Jacob loved Rachel and said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter.” Then Laban said, “Better that I give her to you than I give her to another man. Stay with me.” And Jacob worked for Rachel seven years, but they were as a few days in his eyes because he loved her.

KJV 1900King James Version

Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured. And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter. And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me. And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
