Confirmation from the Jerusalem Apostles

2:1Then after fourteen years I went up to Jerusalem1 again with Barnabas, taking Titus along too. 2:2I went there2 because of3 a revelation and presented4 to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But I did so5 only in a private meeting with the influential people,6 to make sure that I was not running—or had not run7—in vain. 2:3Yet8 not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, although he was a Greek.

Footnotes

  1. 1 For location see ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; .
  2. 2 Grk “I went up”; one always spoke idiomatically of going “up” to Jerusalem.
  3. 3 Or “in accordance with.” According to κατά B.5.a.δ, “Oft. the norm is at the same time the reason, so that in accordance with and because of are merged … Instead of ‘in accordance w.’ κ. can mean simply because of, as a result of, on the basis of … κ. ἀποκάλυψιν Gal 2:2.”
  4. 4 Or “set before them.”
  5. 5 Grk “Gentiles, but only privately … to make sure.” Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started with “But” and the words “I did so,” an implied repetition from the previous clause, were supplied to make a complete English sentence.
  6. 6 L&N 87.42 has “important persons, influential persons, prominent persons” for οἱ δοκοῦντες and translates this phrase in Gal 2:2 as “in a private meeting with the prominent persons.” The “prominent people” referred to here are the leaders of the Jerusalem church.
  7. 7 Here the first verb (τρέχω, trechō, “was not running”) is present subjunctive, while the second (ἔδραμον, edramon, “had not run”) is aorist indicative.
  8. 8 Grk “But,” translated here as “Yet” for stylistic reasons (note the use of “but” in v. 2).

ESVEnglish Standard Version

Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain. But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also. I went in response to a revelation and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain. Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also. I went up according to a revelation and presented to them the gospel I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to those recognized as leaders. I wanted to be sure I was not running, and had not been running, in vain. But not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek.

NLTNew Living Translation

Then fourteen years later I went back to Jerusalem again, this time with Barnabas; and Titus came along, too. I went there because God revealed to me that I should go. While I was there I met privately with those considered to be leaders of the church and shared with them the message I had been preaching to the Gentiles. I wanted to make sure that we were in agreement, for fear that all my efforts had been wasted and I was running the race for nothing. And they supported me and did not even demand that my companion Titus be circumcised, though he was a Gentile.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking along Titus also. Now I went up there because of a revelation and laid out to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles, but in private to the influential people, lest somehow I was running, or had run, in vain. But not even Titus who was with me, although he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.

KJV 1900King James Version

Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also. And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain. But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:
