20:15I also swore27 to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them to the land I had given them—a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands. 20:16I did this28 because they rejected my regulations, did not follow my statutes, and desecrated my Sabbaths; for their hearts followed their idols.29

Footnotes

  1. 27 Heb “I lifted up my hand.”
  2. 28 The words “I did this” are not in the Hebrew text, but are supplied for stylistic reasons. Verses 15–16 are one long sentence in the Hebrew text. The translation divides this sentence into two for stylistic reasons.
  3. 29 Heb “for after their idols their heart was going.” The use of the active participle (“was going”) in the Hebrew text draws attention to the ongoing nature of their idolatrous behavior.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

Moreover, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land that I had given them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most glorious of all lands, because they rejected my rules and did not walk in my statutes, and profaned my Sabbaths; for their heart went after their idols.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Also with uplifted hand I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them—a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands—because they rejected my laws and did not follow my decrees and desecrated my Sabbaths. For their hearts were devoted to their idols.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

However, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them—the most beautiful of all lands, flowing with milk and honey—because they rejected my ordinances, profaned my Sabbaths, and did not follow my statutes. For their hearts went after their idols.

NLTNew Living Translation

But I took a solemn oath against them in the wilderness. I swore I would not bring them into the land I had given them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful place on earth. For they had rejected my regulations, refused to follow my decrees, and violated my Sabbath days. Their hearts were given to their idols.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And also I myself swore to them in the desert not to bring them into the land that I had given to them, flowing with milk and honey—it is the most beautiful of all of the lands— because they despised my judgments, and they did not walk in my statutes, and my Sabbaths they profaned, for their heart was going after their idols.

KJV 1900King James Version

Yet also I lifted up my hand unto them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands; Because they despised my judgments, and walked not in my statutes, but polluted my sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols.
