2:9The arrival of the lawless one18 will be by Satan’s working with all kinds of miracles19 and signs and false wonders, 2:10and with every kind of evil deception directed against20 those who are perishing, because they found no place in their hearts for the truth21 so as to be saved. 2:11Consequently22 God sends on them a deluding influence23 so that they will believe what is false. 2:12And so24 all of them who have not believed the truth but have delighted in evil will be condemned.25

Footnotes

  1. 18 Grk “whose coming,” referring to the lawless one. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek construction, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
  2. 19 Grk “every miracle.”
  3. 20 Grk “deception for/toward.”
  4. 21 Grk “they did not accept the love of the truth.”
  5. 22 Grk “and for this reason.”
  6. 23 Grk “a working of error.”
  7. 24 Grk “that.” A new sentence was started here in the translation for stylistic reasons.
  8. 25 Grk “be judged,” but in this context the term clearly refers to a judgment of condemnation ( κρίνω 5.b.α; cf. “that they all might be damned”). views the condemnation as punishment (“will be punished”).

ESVEnglish Standard Version

The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan’s working, with every kind of miracle, both signs and wonders serving the lie, and with every wicked deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe the lie, so that all will be condemned—those who did not believe the truth but delighted in unrighteousness.

NLTNew Living Translation

This man will come to do the work of Satan with counterfeit power and signs and miracles. He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them. So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies. Then they will be condemned for enjoying evil rather than believing the truth.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

whose coming is in accordance with the working of Satan, with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with every unrighteous deception against those who are perishing, in place of which they did not accept the love of the truth, so that they would be saved. And because of this, God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth, but delighted in unrighteousness.

KJV 1900King James Version

Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
