David Offers a Prayer to God
7:18King David went in, sat before the Lord, and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family,27 that you should have brought me to this point? 7:19And you didn’t stop there, O Lord God! You have also spoken about the future of your servant’s family.28 Is this your usual way of dealing with men,29 O Lord God? 7:20What more can David say to you? You have given your servant special recognition,30 O Lord God! 7:21For the sake of your promise and according to your purpose31 you have done this great thing in order to reveal it to your servant.327:22Therefore you are great, O Lord God, for there is none like you! There is no God besides you! What we have heard is true!33
Footnotes
- 27 Heb “house.”
- 28 Heb “and this was small in your eyes, O Lord God, so you spoke concerning the house of your servant for a distance.”
- 29 Heb “and this [is] the law of man”; “is this the manner of man, O Lord God?”; “this too you have shown to man”; “May this be instruction for the people, O Lord God!” This part of the verse is very enigmatic; no completely satisfying solution has yet been suggested. The present translation tries to make sense of the by understanding the phrase as a question that underscores the uniqueness of God’s dealings with David as described here. The parallel passage in 1 Chr 17:17 reads differently (see the there).
- 30 Heb “and you know your servant.” The verb here refers to recognizing another in a special way and giving them special treatment (see 1 Chr 17:18). Some English versions take this to refer to the Lord’s knowledge of David himself: “you know my thoughts”; “know what I am really like.”
- 31 Heb “for the sake of your word and according to your heart.”
- 32 Heb “to make known, your servant.”
- 33 Heb “in all which we heard with our ears.” The phrase translated “in all” בְּכֹל (békhol) should probably be emended to “according to all” כְּכֹל (kékhol).

Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God. You have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord God! And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord God! Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. Therefore you are great, O Lord God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:
“Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree, Sovereign Lord, is for a mere human!
“What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign Lord. For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.
“How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.

CSBChristian Standard Bible
Then King David went in, sat in the Lord’s presence, and said,
Who am I, Lord God, and what is my house that you have brought me this far? What you have done so far was a little thing to you, Lord God, for you have also spoken about your servant’s house in the distant future. And this is a revelation for mankind, Lord God. What more can David say to you? You know your servant, Lord God. Because of your word and according to your will, you have revealed all these great things to your servant.
This is why you are great, Lord God. There is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, as all we have heard confirms.

NLTNew Living Translation
Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and prayed,
“Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And now, Sovereign Lord, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving your servant a lasting dynasty! Do you deal with everyone this way, O Sovereign Lord?
“What more can I say to you? You know what your servant is really like, Sovereign Lord. Because of your promise and according to your will, you have done all these great things and have made them known to your servant.
“How great you are, O Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you. We have never even heard of another God like you!

LEBThe Lexham English Bible
Then King David went and sat before Yahweh and said, “Who am I, my lord Yahweh, and what is my house that you have brought me up to this place? Still, this was insignificant in your eyes, my lord Yahweh, and also you have spoken about the house of your servant from afar, and this may be the teaching of humans, my lord Yahweh. What more can David say to you? You know your servant, my lord Yahweh. Because of your word and according to your heart, you have done all of this great thing, in order to let your servant know. Therefore you are great, my lord Yahweh, for there is no one like you, and there is no god except you, in all that we have heard with our ears.

KJV 1900King James Version
Then went king David in, and sat before the Lord, and he said, Who am I, O Lord God? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto? And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord God; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant’s house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord God? And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord God, knowest thy servant. For thy word’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them. Wherefore thou art great, O Lord God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
