19:30Those who remain in Judah will take root in the ground and bear fruit.55

19:31For a remnant will leave Jerusalem;

survivors will come out of Mount Zion.

The intense devotion of the sovereign Lord56 to his people57 will accomplish this.

19:32So this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria:

“He will not enter this city,

nor will he shoot an arrow here.58

He will not attack it with his shield-carrying warriors,59

nor will he build siege works against it.

19:33He will go back the way he came.

He will not enter this city,” says the Lord.

19:34I will shield this city and rescue it for the sake of my reputation and because of my promise to David my servant.’ ”60

19:35That very night the Lord’s messenger went out and killed 185,000 men in the Assyrian camp. When they61 got up early the next morning, there were all the corpses.62

Footnotes

  1. 55 Heb “The remnant of the house of Judah that is left will add roots below and produce fruit above.”
  2. 56 Traditionally “the Lord of hosts.”
  3. 57 Heb “the zeal of the Lord.” In this context the Lord’s “zeal” refers to his intense devotion to and love for his people which prompts him to protect and restore them. The Qere, along with many medieval Hebrew and the ancient versions, has “the zeal of the LORD of hosts” rather than “the zeal of the LORD” (Kethib). The translation follows the Qere here.
  4. 58 Heb “there.”
  5. 59 Heb “[with] a shield.” By metonymy the “shield” stands for the soldier who carries it.
  6. 60 Heb “for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.”
  7. 61 This refers to the Israelites and/or the rest of the Assyrian army.
  8. 62 Heb “look, all of them were dead bodies.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward. For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord will do this.

“Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow there, or come before it with a shield or cast up a siege mound against it. By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come into this city, declares the Lord. For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.”

And that night the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah

will take root below and bear fruit above.

For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant,

and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors.

“The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

“Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria:

“ ‘He will not enter this city

or shoot an arrow here.

He will not come before it with shield

or build a siege ramp against it.

By the way that he came he will return;

he will not enter this city,

declares the Lord.

I will defend this city and save it,

for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.’ ”

That night the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies!

CSBChristian Standard Bible

The surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take root downward and bear fruit upward. For a remnant will go out from Jerusalem, and survivors, from Mount Zion. The zeal of the Lord of Armies will accomplish this.

Therefore, this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria:

He will not enter this city,

shoot an arrow here,

come before it with a shield,

or build up a siege ramp against it.

He will go back

the way he came,

and he will not enter this city.

This is the Lord’s declaration.

I will defend this city and rescue it

for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.”

That night the angel of the Lord went out and struck down one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies!

NLTNew Living Translation

And you who are left in Judah,

who have escaped the ravages of the siege,

will put roots down in your own soil

and will grow up and flourish.

For a remnant of my people will spread out from Jerusalem,

a group of survivors from Mount Zion.

The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies

will make this happen!

“And this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria:

“His armies will not enter Jerusalem.

They will not even shoot an arrow at it.

They will not march outside its gates with their shields

nor build banks of earth against its walls.

The king will return to his own country

by the same road on which he came.

He will not enter this city,

says the Lord.

For my own honor and for the sake of my servant David,

I will defend this city and protect it.”

That night the angel of the Lord went out to the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers. When the surviving Assyrians woke up the next morning, they found corpses everywhere.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

The remainder of the house of Judah that survives will again take root below and bear fruit above. For from Jerusalem a remnant shall go out and survivors from Mount Zion; the zeal of Yahweh will do this.

“ ‘Therefore thus says Yahweh to the king of Assyria, “He shall not come to this city, nor shall he shoot an arrow there, nor shall he bring a small shield near her, nor shall he cast a siege ramp against her. By the way that he came to her he shall return; but to this city, he shall not come,” declares Yahweh. And I will defend this city to save her for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.’ ”

It happened in that night that an angel of Yahweh went out, and he struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of Assyria. When they got up early in the morning, look! All of them were dead corpses.

KJV 1900King James Version

And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah

Shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant,

And they that escape out of mount Zion:

The zeal of the Lord of hosts shall do this.

Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the king of Assyria,

He shall not come into this city,

Nor shoot an arrow there,

Nor come before it with shield,

Nor cast a bank against it.

By the way that he came, by the same shall he return,

And shall not come into this city, saith the Lord.

For I will defend this city, to save it,

For mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.

And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
