Footnotes

  1. 34 “Other” is not in the Greek text but is supplied for clarity in English.
  2. 35 Grk “by means of.”
  3. 36 Presumably the author means he would rather say the additional things he wants to say to the recipients in person rather than by letter (with paper and ink).
  4. 37 Grk “speak mouth to mouth,” an idiom for which the English equivalent is “speak face to face.”
  5. 38 Grk “be fulfilled.”
  6. 39 The Byzantine text has ἀμήν (amēn, “amen”) at the conclusion of this letter. Such a conclusion is routinely added by scribes to NT books because a few of these books originally had such an ending (cf. Rom 16:27; Gal 6:18; Jude 25). A majority of Greek witnesses have the concluding ἀμήν in every NT book except Acts, James, and 3 John (and even in these books, ἀμήν is found in some witnesses). It is thus a predictable variant. Further, the particle is lacking in excellent, early, and diffuse witnesses (א A B P Ψ 33 81 323 1739 1881 co), rendering its omission the strongly preferred reading.
