Footnotes

  1. 21 The word used here, גִלּוּלִים [gillulim], is always used as a disdainful reference to idols. It is generally thought to have originally referred to “dung pellets” (cf. 183 גִלּוּלִים). It is only one of several terms used in this way, such as “worthless things” (אֱלִילִים, ’elilim), “vanities” or “empty winds” (הֲבָלִים, havalim).
  2. 22 Heb “fathers” (also in v. 24).
  3. 23 Heb “mother,” but Hebrew often uses the terms “father” and “mother” for grandparents and more remote ancestors.
  4. 24 Heb “yet the heart of Asa was complete with the Lord all his days.”

NIVNew International Version (2011)

He expelled the male shrine prostitutes from the land and got rid of all the idols his ancestors had made. He even deposed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah. Asa cut it down and burned it in the Kidron Valley. Although he did not remove the high places, Asa’s heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life.

NLTNew Living Translation

Although the pagan shrines were not removed, Asa’s heart remained completely faithful to the Lord throughout his life.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

He put away the male shrine prostitutes from the land, and he removed all of the idols that his ancestors made. Also, he had Maacah his mother removed from the office of queen mother, as she had made a repulsive image for the Asherah. Asa also cut down her repulsive image and burned it in the Wadi Kidron. And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burnt it by the brook Kidron.
