20My ambition has always been to proclaim the Good News in places where Christ has not been heard of, so as not to build on a foundation laid by someone else. 21*As the scripture says:

“Those who were not told about him will see,

and those who have not heard will understand.”

Paul’s Plan to Visit Rome

22*And so I have been prevented many times from coming to you.

and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else’s foundation, but as it is written,

“Those who have never been told of him will see,

and those who have never heard will understand.”

This is the reason why I have so often been hindered from coming to you.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation. Rather, as it is written:

“Those who were not told about him will see,

and those who have not heard will understand.”

This is why I have often been hindered from coming to you.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

My aim is to preach the gospel where Christ has not been named, so that I will not build on someone else’s foundation, but, as it is written,

Those who were not told about him will see,

and those who have not heard will understand.

That is why I have been prevented many times from coming to you.

NLTNew Living Translation

My ambition has always been to preach the Good News where the name of Christ has never been heard, rather than where a church has already been started by someone else. I have been following the plan spoken of in the Scriptures, where it says,

“Those who have never been told about him will see,

and those who have never heard of him will understand.”

In fact, my visit to you has been delayed so long because I have been preaching in these places.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And so, having as my ambition to proclaim the gospel where Christ has not been named, in order that I will not build on the foundation belonging to someone else, but just as it is written,

“Those to whom it was not announced concerning him will see,

and those who have not heard will understand.”

For this reason also I was hindered many times from coming to you,

KJV 1900King James Version

Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man’s foundation: But as it is written, To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see: and they that have not heard shall understand. For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you.
