Obadiah 8–11

8 “In that day,” declares the Lord,

“will I not destroy the wise men of Edom,

those of understanding in the mountains of Esau?

9 Your warriors, Teman, will be terrified,

and everyone in Esau’s mountains

will be cut down in the slaughter.

10 Because of the violence against your brother Jacob,

you will be covered with shame;

you will be destroyed forever.

11 On the day you stood aloof

while strangers carried off his wealth

and foreigners entered his gates

and cast lots for Jerusalem,

you were like one of them.

8 Shall I not in that day, saith the Lord,

Even destroy the wise men out of Edom,

And understanding out of the mount of Esau?

9 And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed,

To the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

10 For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee,

And thou shalt be cut off for ever.

11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side,

In the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces,

And foreigners entered into his gates,

And cast lots upon Jerusalem,

Even thou wast as one of them.

8 At that time not a single wise person

will be left in the whole land of Edom,”

says the Lord.

“For on the mountains of Edom

I will destroy everyone who has understanding.

9 The mightiest warriors of Teman

will be terrified,

and everyone on the mountains of Edom

will be cut down in the slaughter.

10 “Because of the violence you did

to your close relatives in Israel,

you will be filled with shame

and destroyed forever.

11 When they were invaded,

you stood aloof, refusing to help them.

Foreign invaders carried off their wealth

and cast lots to divide up Jerusalem,

but you acted like one of Israel’s enemies.

8 “Will I not in that day,” says the Lord,

“Even destroy the wise men from Edom,

And understanding from the mountains of Esau?

9 Then your mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed,

To the end that everyone from the mountains of Esau

May be cut off by slaughter.

10 “For violence against your brother Jacob,

Shame shall cover you,

And you shall be cut off forever.

11 In the day that you stood on the other side—

In the day that strangers carried captive his forces,

When foreigners entered his gates

And cast lots for Jerusalem—

Even you were as one of them.

8 The Lord says, “On that day

I will surely destroy the wise people from Edom,

and those with understanding from the mountains of Edom.

9 Then, city of Teman, your best warriors will be afraid,

and everyone from the mountains of Edom will be killed.

10 You did violence to your relatives, the Israelites,

so you will be covered with shame

and destroyed forever.

11 You stood aside without helping

while strangers carried Israel’s treasures away.

When foreigners entered Israel’s city gate

and threw lots to decide what part of Jerusalem they would take,

you were like one of them.

8 Shall I not in that day, saith Jehovah, destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau? 9 And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one may be cut off from the mount of Esau by slaughter.

10 For the violence done to thy brother Jacob, shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever. 11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away his substance, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

8 “On that day I will destroy the wise people in Edom 

and take wisdom away from Esau’s mountain,” declares the Lord. 

9 “Teman, your warriors will be terrified. 

Everyone on Esau’s mountain will be slaughtered. 

10 “Because of the violence you did to Jacob, your relative, 

you will be covered with shame. 

You will be destroyed forever. 

11 While you stood there doing nothing, 

strangers carried off Jacob’s wealth. 

Foreigners entered his gates and threw dice for Jerusalem. 

You acted like one of them. 

8 In that day—

this is the Lord’s declaration—

will I not eliminate the wise ones of Edom

and those who understand

from the hill country of Esau?

9 Teman, your warriors will be terrified

so that everyone from the hill country of Esau

will be destroyed by slaughter.

10 You will be covered with shame

and destroyed forever

because of violence done to your brother Jacob.

11 On the day you stood aloof,

on the day strangers captured his wealth,

while foreigners entered his gate

and cast lots for Jerusalem,

you were just like one of them.

8 On that day, says the Lord,

I will destroy the wise out of Edom

and understanding out of Mount Esau.

9 Your warriors shall be shattered, O Teman,

so that everyone from Mount Esau will be cut off.

10 For the slaughter and violence done to your brother Jacob,

shame shall cover you,

and you shall be cut off forever.

11 On the day that you stood aside,

on the day that strangers carried off his wealth

and foreigners entered his gates

and cast lots for Jerusalem,

you, too, were one of them.

8 On that day,” declares Yahweh, “will I not destroy the wise men from Edom, and understanding from the mountain of Esau? 9 And your warriors will be shattered, O Teman, so that everyone from the mountain of Esau will be cut off because of the slaughter!

10 “Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you and you will be cut off forever. 11 On the day you stood nearby, on the day strangers took his wealth, and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots over Jerusalem, you were also like one of them.

8 The Lord announces, “At that time

I will destroy the wise men of Edom.

I will wipe out the men of understanding

in the mountains of Esau.

9 People of Teman, your soldiers will be terrified.

Everyone in Esau’s mountains

will be cut down with swords.

10 You did harmful things to your brothers,

the people of Jacob.

So you will be covered with shame.

You will be destroyed forever.

11 Strangers entered the gates of Jerusalem.

They cast lots to see what each one would get.

They carried off its wealth.

When that happened, you just stood there and did nothing.

You were like one of them.

You too were as one of them.
