1 The vision of Obadiah.

This is what the Sovereign Lord says about Edom—

We have heard a message from the Lord:

An envoy was sent to the nations to say,

“Rise, let us go against her for battle”—

2 “See, I will make you small among the nations;

you will be utterly despised.

3 The pride of your heart has deceived you,

you who live in the clefts of the rocks

and make your home on the heights,

you who say to yourself,

‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’

Thus saith the Lord God concerning Edom;

We have heard a rumour from the Lord,

And an ambassador is sent among the heathen,

Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.

2 Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen:

Thou art greatly despised.

3 The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee,

Thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high;

That saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

1 This is the vision that the Sovereign Lord revealed to Obadiah concerning the land of Edom.

We have heard a message from the Lord

that an ambassador was sent to the nations to say,

“Get ready, everyone!

Let’s assemble our armies and attack Edom!”

2 The Lord says to Edom,

“I will cut you down to size among the nations;

you will be greatly despised.

3 You have been deceived by your own pride

because you live in a rock fortress

and make your home high in the mountains.

‘Who can ever reach us way up here?’

you ask boastfully.

Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom

(We have heard a report from the Lord,

And a messenger has been sent among the nations, saying,

“Arise, and let us rise up against her for battle”):

2 “Behold, I will make you small among the nations;

You shall be greatly despised.

3 The pride of your heart has deceived you,

You who dwell in the clefts of the rock,

Whose habitation is high;

You who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’

This is what the Lord God says about Edom:

A messenger has been sent among the nations, saying,

“Attack! Let’s go attack Edom!”

2 “Soon I will make you the smallest of nations.

You will be greatly hated by everyone.

3 Your pride has fooled you,

you who live in the hollow places of the cliff.

Your home is up high,

you who say to yourself,

‘No one can bring me down to the ground.’

Thus saith the Lord Jehovah concerning Edom: We have heard tidings from Jehovah, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle. 2 Behold, I have made thee small among the nations: thou art greatly despised. 3 The pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

2 “Edom, I will make you the smallest of nations. 

Others will despise you. 

3 Your arrogance has deceived you. 

You live on rocky cliffs. 

You make your home up high. 

You say to yourself, 

‘No one can bring me down to earth.’

This is what the Lord God has said about Edom:

We have heard a message from the Lord;

a messenger has been sent among the nations:

“Rise up, and let us go to war against her.”

2 Look, I will make you insignificant

among the nations;

you will be deeply despised.

3 Your presumptuous heart has deceived you,

you who live in clefts of the rock

in your home on the heights,

who say to yourself,

“Who can bring me down to the ground?”

We have heard a report from the Lord,

and a messenger has been sent among the nations:

“Rise up! Let us rise against it for battle!”

2 I will surely make you least among the nations;

you shall be utterly despised.

3 Your proud heart has deceived you,

you that live in the clefts of the rock,

whose dwelling is in the heights.

You say in your heart,

“Who will bring me down to the ground?”

We have heard a report from Yahweh, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: “Rise up and let us rise against it for battle.” 2 “Look, I will make you insignificant among the nations. You will be utterly despised! 3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of a rock, the heights of its dwelling, you who say in your heart: ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’

1 This is the vision about Edom that Obadiah had. Here is what he said.

We’ve heard a message from the Lord and King.

A messenger was sent to the nations.

The Lord told him to say,

“Get up! Let us go and make war against Edom.”

2 The Lord says to Edom,

“I will make you weak among the nations.

They will look down on you.

3 You live in the safety of the rocks.

You make your home high up in the mountains.

But your proud heart has tricked you.

So you say to yourself,

‘No one can bring me down to the ground.’

We have heard a report from the Lord,

And an envoy has been sent among the nations saying,

You who live in the clefts of the rock,

In the loftiness of your dwelling place,

Who say in your heart,

‘Who will bring me down to earth?’
