Numbers 21:26–28

26 Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon.

27 That is why the poets say:

“Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt;

let Sihon’s city be restored.

28 “Fire went out from Heshbon,

a blaze from the city of Sihon.

It consumed Ar of Moab,

the citizens of Arnon’s heights.

26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon. 27 Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say,

Come into Heshbon,

Let the city of Sihon be built and prepared:

28 For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon,

A flame from the city of Sihon:

It hath consumed Ar of Moab,

And the lords of the high places of Arnon.

26 Heshbon had been the capital of King Sihon of the Amorites. He had defeated a former Moabite king and seized all his land as far as the Arnon River. 27 Therefore, the ancient poets wrote this about him:

“Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt!

Let the city of Sihon be restored.

28 A fire flamed forth from Heshbon,

a blaze from the city of Sihon.

It burned the city of Ar in Moab;

it destroyed the rulers of the Arnon heights.

26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and had taken all his land from his hand as far as the Arnon. 27 Therefore those who speak in proverbs say:

“Come to Heshbon, let it be built;

Let the city of Sihon be repaired.

28 “For fire went out from Heshbon,

A flame from the city of Sihon;

It consumed Ar of Moab,

The lords of the heights of the Arnon.

26 Heshbon was the city where Sihon, the Amorite king, lived. In the past he had fought with the king of Moab and had taken all the land as far as the Arnon.

27 That is why the poets say:

“Come to Heshbon

and rebuild it;

rebuild Sihon’s city.

28 A fire began in Heshbon;

flames came from Sihon’s city.

It destroyed Ar in Moab,

and it burned the Arnon highlands.

27 This is why the poets say: 

“Come to Heshbon! Rebuild it! 

Restore Sihon’s city! 

28 Fire came out of Heshbon, 

flames from Sihon’s city. 

They destroyed Ar of Moab, 

the rulers of Arnon’s worship sites.

Come to Heshbon, let it be rebuilt;

let the city of Sihon be restored.

28 For fire came out of Heshbon,

a flame from the city of Sihon.

It consumed Ar of Moab,

the lords of Arnon’s heights.

26 For Heshbon was the city of King Sihon of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and captured all his land as far as the Arnon. 27 Therefore the singers say,

“Come to Heshbon; let it be built;

let the city of Sihon be established.

28 For fire came out from Heshbon,

flame from the city of Sihon.

It devoured Ar of Moab

and swallowed up the heights of the Arnon.

26 Because Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land from his hand until Arnon. 27 Thus the ones who quote proverbs say,

“Come to Heshbon! Let it be built!

And let the city of Sihon be established.

28 Because fire went out from Heshbon,

a flame from the city of Sihon;

it consumed Ar of Moab,

the lords of the high places of Arnon.

26 Sihon, the king of the Amorites, ruled in Heshbon. He had fought against an earlier king of Moab. Sihon had taken from him all of his land all the way to the Arnon River.

27 That’s why the poets say,

“Come to Heshbon. Let it be built again.

Let Sihon’s city be made as good as new.

28 “Fire went out from Heshbon.

A blaze went out from the city of Sihon.

It burned up Ar in Moab.

It burned up the citizens who lived on Arnon’s hills.

26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon.

27 Therefore those who use proverbs say,

“Come to Heshbon! Let it be built!

So let the city of Sihon be established.

28 “For a fire went forth from Heshbon,

A flame from the town of Sihon;

It devoured Ar of Moab,

The dominant heights of the Arnon.
